Immortal Iron Fist is pretty amazing
2008-01-08 15:34:37
I hadn’t originally gotten into the Immortal Iron Fist series, despite it being highly recommended to me.  Upon recently reading the first six (so far), I have decided that I greatly lament my previous decisions.  I think it’s pretty amazing, which makes sense, it is written by Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker, and most of what he writes is comic gold.  The interplay between the characters has been amazing, and Danny Rand is turning out to be a considerable hero.  The comic strikes a good balance between art and text, both bringing elements to the table, such as Brubaker and Fraction’s skillful use of narration and speech bubbles when needed, and neither seems overplayed.  David Aja has a fairly spartan art style, which I greatly appreciate, with generally stark backgrounds, often a simple black, clearly emphasizing the character that is being portrayed.  The interplay between the two Iron Fists in the first six comics has been outstanding, and is a great setup for ...

Top 8 Most Cringeworthy Moments in Comic Book Movie History
2008-01-05 11:40:28
I had a post I had planned to write up, but once again, I got side tracked, and put in awe/despair by this.  Published on Cracked.com, “America’s Only Humor and Video Site, Since 1959.” Some of it is right on the money, such as how Batman and Robin was a godawful movie.  But I can live with that, I like batman, and I watch it as a comedy.  Some things I didn’t agree with were the ones in the beginning.  Such as the “I’m the Juggernaut, bitch” line in X-Men 3.  He shows the youtube video which this line was based off of, and frankly, as someone who found that video to be pretty funny (for the first few minutes, then it just dragged out), I thought the Juggernaut’s line in the movie was a hilarious nod to fans.  Despite that, he calls this single line the reason the third X-Men movie was terrible.  No.  Nono, I can think of loads of reasons that the movie was terrible, some nit-picky, such as spike being white, or Colossus not being ...

Rapid Fire Reviews: Gamma Corps, New Avengers, Incredible Herc, and Avengers: The Initiative
2008-01-04 21:20:32
World War Hulk – Gamma Corps #4 of 4 The gamma corps is a group of five individuals who believe their lives to have been decimated by the Hulk. They have had their bodies augmented by hulk DNA. The members are Grey, who is essentially a grey, smaller and less berserk version of the hulk, Mess, who has had parts of her skin grafted with skin samples grown from gamma DNA, Mister Gideon, a former pastor who has some titanium hands, Griffin, who’s just crazy, and he flies, and Prodigy, who was a child born autistic, but then was taken into the gamma corps program and is now a super genius with limited telepathic powers. The issues of this mini have been rather entertaining, without standing out as being amazing; this final one however, is pretty good. Nothing amazing in and of itself, however, it shows a character change in the Hulk that we’ve been seeing over the past few months in World War Hulk. While the Hulk always had depth in his character, much of this came f ...

YouTube Video Parodies Marvel Deaths
2008-01-03 02:07:30
Well, I had a number of things planned to write up and post about today, before I get far too behind (I still want to get my review of New Avengers #37 finalized) but today managed to be overly hectic as well. I was forwarded this video shown below by a friend today however, which I found to be fairly apt, as we’ve had quite a few marvel deaths recently, even if we don’t count Silver Surfer’s death in Requiem produced by Marvel Knights, which if you haven’t read, I would list as one of the top mini’s for 2007, we still have had Captain America and Aunt May (but not really?), as well as Gwen Stacy, Uncle Ben, and Oswald’s un-deaths, just to name a few. Speaking of One More Day, I have been fairly quiet on the subject, but sufficed to say, I’m pretty ticked off about it. Not only has it completely screwed up the last 20 years of Spider-man history, Joe Quesada is trying to backpeddle? Also, going purely beyond the writing, I found the art to ...

Happy 2008 Everyone!
2008-01-01 18:08:14
I hope everyone had a good new year’s party, I know I did. I’ve had a super lazy day, first in a while, and it has been pretty amazing. I finally managed to get my hands on a copy of X-Factor 26 to read, and I’m now fully up to date on Messiah Complex. Unfortunately I’m finding that while each individual issue of MC is absolutely amazing, there could be more transition between them. SPOILERS — Such as when Cable is revealed at the very end of episode 5, they don’t explain how the X-Men know of his existence at the start of episode 6. I’m at least 90% sure of this as well, because I re read the issues to try and piece together what is happening in between each one, and I’m afraid to say I’m coming up with nothing. Perhaps someone else could point me in the right direction, because right now it’s a little lost on me. However, every issue is just amazing, and I eagerly anticipate the next one. Another issue of Rapid Fire ...
Top 5 Comic Book Fights of 2007
2007-12-31 15:36:14
For the final post of 2007, Your Comic Relief is bringing you my personal opinions (also known as fact) on the top five comic book fights of two thousand and seven. This list is not all inclusive as I have not read every comic from 2007, but from what I’ve read, and what I remember from the beginning of the year (I think these are all from more recent memory, but I gave it a good think), I present you with The Top 5 Comic Book Fights from 2007! 5 – “Patches Malone” vs would be assassins   Seen in Gotham Underground #2, this one sneaks in at slot number five because it shows just how amazing Bruce Wayne is. Many comic book fight scenes are drawn out, so that the reader can see each individual motion that the characters are performing. While this is often a good tactic on the part of the writer/artist, this one is awesome by virtue of its exceptionally short length. Weighing in at one page, of which only three panels are of fighting, Bruce beats the snot out ...
Occupying Time Off
2007-12-30 15:48:30
Mike over at Panels of Awesome, which btw have recently changed sites, so update your bookmarks, posted today on what to do while you’ve got downtime, be it from work or school.  I thought it was a very interesting topic, and to occupy my downtime, I figured I’d blog about it.  I left a comment saying that I tend to read old comics, but I do other stuff too; I read other’s blogs fanatically.  I figured I’d take some time and spotlight on some great blog posts of late by other bloggers.   Rokk’s Comic Revolution writes some great reviews that I often don’t really get to appreciate during the busy times of the year.  I’ve been reading them over the last few days and as someone who puts a lot of time and thought into writing reviews, I really appreciate what he’s doing there.  On the topic of reviews, Faust’s website, entitled Faust’s Fantastically Fantasmagoric Forum, writes on a wide variety of topics, including televisi ...
Review: Thor #5
2007-12-30 12:51:23
Big issue of the week for me is Thor.  As many of you know (or could guess from the banner at the top of the page, or my avatar), I am a big Thor fan.  Thor #5 was released this week, and I actually had a request to post my thoughts about it.  So for the first time I can say “by request” I have reviewed Thor #5.  No big spoilers here even though I do go through the plot in depth, but be warned, in order to really review this comic, I gotta give away the ending.  If you have doubts, as always, feel free to skip to the Is it Worth Buying section.   Lead up to story             It is official, Thor is back.  I’m going to give you some background info on what has happened in the previous three issues, but if you haven’t read them, stop whatever you are doing and go read them by whatever means necessary, I’m serious, they’re that good, especially issue #3.  Essentially, Thor has returned, and he is seeking out his fellow Asgardians that ...
End of Year Comic Pull List Reshuffling
2007-12-30 00:53:20
So, 2007 is nearing an end, and I figured I’d poll anyone who visits this site on what they’ll be changing in their pull list. I find this time of the year is a good time to sort that stuff out, and while I’ll tweak my pull list throughout the year, this is the time of the year in which I make larger changes. Daredevil: dropped I feel like nothing has been happening too much, it’s all been more of the same false leads following up on them for nothing. Daredevil has never been one of the fastest paced comics out there, but not I feel that Murdock could sneeze and that’d be enough for the editors. The annual was amazing, I was a huge fan of that, but the lead up to issue #100 was so big, and in the end that flopped. It pains me to drop this title, especially considering that he is one of my favourite characters in the Marvel universe. The Order: dropped Yeah, not much has been happening in The Order either, well, no, that’s a lie. Things have been ...
Review: Sub-Mariner: The Initiative
2007-12-28 15:45:35
Prologue: my apologies for the recent radio silence from Your Comic Relief, I have been wrapped up in things relating to Christmas and New Years, I should be able to update frequently between now and New Years, and daily updates will officially resume on the 2nd of January. Just giving myself some room to breath if necessary during this hectic time of year. Now, on with the review!   Lead-up to the Story This storyline takes place after Civil War has ended, and is a continuation of Wolverine’s Civil War tie in. His tie in was focused around finding Nitro, and the discovery of Atlantian sleeper cells in the United States, which were eventually recalled. Essentially, Namor had placed a number of these cells around the country to monitor the populace and government, and to act if necessary. The other important outcome of the story arc is that Nitro, the one responsible for the attacks in Stamford, Connecticut, is the custody of Atlantis.   Plot S ...

Rapid Fire Reviews: Moon Knight, Silver Surfer, Ultimate Iron Man, and Superman/Batman
2007-12-24 17:29:42
Moon Knight 2007 Annual             Marc Spector, aka Moon Knight, is back in this annual… sort of.  He doesn’t appear until page 16 (not counting advertisements), and even then, he disappears for a while, returning on page 25.  The Moon Knight annual is written by Duane Swierczynski (who will be writing Cable!), and illustrated by Jefte Palo (making his debut), and edited by Axel Alonso.  These men are the ones to blame for this, if you didn’t like it.  That’s a tad harsh; the story is good, I just would have preferred to see more Moon Knight in it.  The story is more about a sexual predator and how he preyed upon women, and was eventually found by Moon Knight, told from the perspective of an unlucky woman.  I have to say though, it is refreshing to see that Marc Spector is back to his usual line of work, his previous story arc was confusing and not really to my liking.  The art is good, not the super detailed art you may find elsewhere, but in a style very ...
