DMZ: North Korea
2008-02-11 14:44:00
DMZ: North KoreaOf all the weird and wacky crimes committed by North Korean despot Kim Jong Il, some of the weirdest and wackiest were the kidnappings of Japanese civilians for such disparate duties as training spies and making movies. Still, that was a pretty good scheme, at least for an evil dictator, because nobody would willingly sign up for a tour of duty in Pyongyang. It's also a tactic that developer Jarhead Games (known for such straight-to-Wal-Mart classics as World War II Sniper: Call to Victory) might want to adopt for DMZ: North Korea, because nobody would willingly play this horrible third-person shooter. There are so many awful things to discuss here that it's hard to decide where to start. But let's begin with the plot, which is B-movie absurdity at its finest. Whoever came up with this saga about an American commando waging a one-man war against North Korea hasn't opened a newspaper in a few years, as the story deals with discovering whether or not the nation has an ...

Worms Forts: Under Siege!
2008-02-11 14:11:00
Worms Forts: Under Siege!Team 17's newest game in the Worms series will have you building structures strategically in addition to blowing up your wormy foes. The big new change to Worms Forts is related to the "forts" part (and the "!" part, if you like). Essentially, you'll have to construct a network of buildings outward from an initial stronghold, and these buildings will determine both where you can attack from and what you can attack with. There are different kinds of buildings that you can build based on location and resources, and once you've got a building planted and you're ready to make your worm attack from it, you'll pop up a window that shows the available weaponry for that building. There's a sizable strategic element to Worms Forts' building system, because the chain of buildings extending from your stronghold acts as a sort of supply line. If you destroy a particular building in a chain, any buildings beyond it that aren't otherwise linked to your stronghold will ...
Sins of a Solar Empire
2008-02-11 14:01:00
Sins of a Solar EmpireSins is a game of interstellar conquest featuring three different factions, though you can have up to 10 players, both human and computer-controlled, in a game. The scale of the game can vary from three planets, which is designed to last under an hour, to multiple star systems filled with a dozen planets each. That size of game "could take months," according to Stardock president Brad Wardell. Like many turn-based space strategy games, you start Sins with control of a single planet, and your goal is to explore space and expand by colonizing newly discovered worlds, exploiting the resources on those planets to build larger fleets, and using those fleets to exterminate your enemies. However, the difference is that this process happens in real time, so the game is constantly flowing.Travel between planets is done by phase jumping, which is sort of like warp speed in Star Trek. However, there are some things to keep in mind. First, ships have to travel outside the gra ...

Heroes of Annihilated Empires
2008-02-06 18:09:00
Heroes of Annihilated Empires comes with a single campaign, and it features the Sylvan folk and the titular hero, Elhant. It's a little odd that there are empty slots in the campaign selection screen, as if there are two other campaigns to unlock. While apparently reserved for the two planned sequels, the slots are more than a little misleading and make the game feel unfinished. Thankfully, the single campaign is likable, even if it's mired in the decades of high fantasy that preceded it. We've all fought the legions of undead with our swords and bows in other games, and there's nothing inherently wrong with the conventional fairies, elves, and dwarves that populate Heroes. But there are hints of greater things to come that remain unexplained, such as the remains of a crashed jet fighter on a mountain top. If you're looking for some kind of intriguing science-fiction/fantasy crossover like the 2001 role-playing game Arcanum, you won't find it here, as the game forces you to wait ...
Scarface: The World Is Yours
2008-02-06 17:58:00
Scarface: The World Is YoursOnce you get over the whole rewriting-the-end-of-the-movie thing, Scarface: The World Is Yours is a competent but usually uninteresting action game.Slight variations on that conversation have probably happened thousands of times since the 1983 release of Scarface, which featured Al Pacino as a tough-talking up-and-coming crime lord who makes a fortune dealing cocaine in Miami, only to lose it all by taking his eye off the ball and becoming way too focused on getting high on his own supply. Through the power of video game magic, Sierra and Radical Entertainment have teamed up to answer the question: What would have happened to Tony Montana if he had escaped from the mansion? What about his empire? And the video game answer to that question is that he'd lose it all and have to perform a number of Grand Theft Auto-like tasks to get it back. The game keeps track of two different sums of money. Your cash on hand is treated as dirty money, and when you die, you lo ...
Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero
2008-02-06 17:32:00
Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero is a game from the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. It featured the original Sub-Zero in an adventure to defeat Quan Chi from retrieving an amulet that would free the fallen Elder God Shinnok.Although released five years after the first Mortal Kombat game, the storyline in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero dates back furthest chronologically, even before the first game. This was done to further expand elements on the existing storyline, especially concerning Quan Chi, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Shinnok, and the Lin Kuei.Thousands of years ago, Shinnok existed as an Elder God. The Elder Gods are the true rulers of all realms. They watch as worlds are created and destroyed and govern the realms with untold eons of wisdom. Shinnok, however, gave in to greed and illusions of false power through the new realm of Earth. If he could have that realm to himself, he would have power unmatched. To accomplish his goal, he first would have to face the god of thunde ...
Star Wars: Empire at War
2008-02-06 16:31:00
Star Wars: Empire at WarStar Wars fans finally get to play a strategy game worthy of the license. The Star Wars franchise has seen its share of great action games, role-playing games, and space-combat simulators, but the strategy genre is something that, for some reason, has proved elusive for LucasArts to truly capture. The efforts to date, including Rebellion, Force Commander, and Galactic Battlegrounds, have ranged from poor to pretty good. Petroglyph's Empire at War is the game that's finally gotten the formula down just right. In Empire at War, the action takes place both in outer space and on the surface of planets, but the interconnection of the two is one of many important strategic aspects that you'll consider as you make your way through the campaign and galactic conquest scenarios. Logical differences in the optimal playing style between the Empire and Rebellion, as well as an epic presentation befitting of the license, contribute to a fantastic overall package that any st ...
Arx Fatalis
2008-02-06 15:42:00
Arx FatalisWith Arx Fatalis, Arkane Studios intended to pay homage to the classic early-'90s first-person role-playing game Ultima Underworld, but it has done much more than just imitate that game.Unfortunately for Arx Fatalis, it's arrived on the tail end of what's certainly been an amazing year for computer role-playing, thanks to impressive games like The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Neverwinter Nights. Players still enthralled by those games are liable to overlook this highly atmospheric first-person dungeon crawl, which boasts some surprisingly impressive production values. But you'll be pleased that you took the time out of your busy role-playing schedule to read up on another great 2002 RPG. With Arx Fatalis, French developer Arkane Studios intended to pay homage to the classic early-'90s first-person role-playing game Ultima Underworld, but it has done much more than just imitate that game. Arx Fatalis is entertaining and great looking, and it should especially appeal ...
