A suggestion for a most overdue reform
2007-01-18 21:05:31
Can we get the fuck rid of school buses, please?  There must be a way.  Make the parents pick their own kids up, make the kids walk, install some sort of trolley or private rail system so they can be transported via some route other than the main roads ? there?s got to be a better way to do this. Today on the way back from class I was in the middle of a line of at least twenty cars, all stuck behind a school bus dropping kids off after school, all driven by men and women just like me, men and women whose only crime was wanting to go home.  The bus puts on its yellow flashers and slows up.  The bus stops in front of a house, puts on its red lights and swings out the Stop sign mounted on the side.  The door folds open and some little bastard walks out lugging his knapsack and goes up his driveway and into his house.  The bus gets going again, puts its yellow flashers on in front of another house two or three doors up, maybe a grand total of 20 yards from the last house, and the whole thi ...
Back at it
2007-01-17 22:15:07
Yesterday was the start of the spring term at HCC, so I?m back at school.  A month for winter break was nice, but almost too nice ? I?ve grown accustomed to waking up whenever the hell I felt like it and spending the day watching DVDs and poking around online.  That gets old after awhile, though.  Being back at school and having something to do is actually a relief. Yesterday was Art Appreciation, Music Appreciation, and Basic Screenwriting.  The teacher of the screenwriting course is Doug Hessler, who has a few motion picture credits to his name, as producer and writer.  He?s from around here, which is a little odd for a dude who makes his living in the movie industry, but heartening all the same.  Even odder is the fact that all but one of the films to his credit listed at the IMDb are German films.  How a dude from Hagerstown winds up writing films in Germany must be a mildly amusing story.  He seems like a nice guy, though, very relaxed, very knowledgeable.  He?s had a student pull ...
Of God and Global Warming
2007-01-16 21:40:57
The ones who have something to lose I understand.  The men and women who make their money in oil or automobiles or timber deny that global warming exists, or at least dispute humanity?s complicity, because widespread action to combat destructive climate changes would hit them right in the bank account.  Their rejection of science is driven by greed, and even more basically, by self-preservation.  It?s the regular Joes who challenge the reality of the warming climate who baffle me.  They aren?t opposed to global warming because they dispute the science, because they?ve looked at the data and drawn different conclusions; they?re opposed to global warming on deep moral and religious grounds ? to even admit the possibility is a heresy.  Why? Ashley?s father Jim is one of the smartest men I know.  He was my history teacher in high school, and the guy can talk intelligently on a vast array of topics.  We disagree on a lot politically ? he?s pretty conservative, he?s a devoted attendee and me ...
Goodbye Wonder Book, hello Wonder Book
2007-01-15 22:57:58
The Massey Boulevard location of Wonder Book and Video is closing at the end of the month.  They?re relocating to a bigger facility on the Dual Highway, next to where first Zaire?s and then Ames used to be.  The new place opened January 1 and the old place doesn?t close until the 31st, so for a few glorious weeks here in Hagerstown, we have two Wonder Books. Ashley and I paid a last visit to the old place last night.  It had been partially gutted, all the DVDs and most of the VHS tapes moved to the new location, nothing left but stacks and stacks and stacks of old books, and some new ones.  Empty wooden bookshelves, worn and dusty and brown, leaned against the wall where the new DVD releases had been, for sale $25 apiece.  I thought about getting one, just for a keepsake.  Maybe I?ll still go back and buy one before they close up forever.  Maybe I won?t. Books were on sale, everything for $1.  Ashley found a Joyce Carol Oates novel she incredibly didn?t have, so she got that; I found a ...
Would you buy a used Savior from these men?

National problems are also local problems.  The whole country sees Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell and shakes its head, but here in Hagerstown we have a few nutsack evangelicals who are uniquely our own.  More than a few, now that I think about it.  I mean, Ashley?s parents go to a church where the children put on a skit that implied non-Christians killed at the World Trade Center had it coming, for Christ?s sake.  There are three church leaders around here that stand out from the pack, the slimiest of the slimy. Larry Aikens is the senior pastor at Emmanuel Baptist Temple, located on the National Pike just west of Huyetts Crossroad, eight miles outside of where I grew up in Clear Spring.  Back when I was a kid the senior pastor at Emmanuel was a guy named Ed Hampton.  He appeared in a series of mini-sermons that ran on Antietam Cable during commercial breaks, called A Moment of Truth.  Hampton had all the charisma of a pair of socks, so how he ever got on television is beyond me.  He ...
Klan Kingpin Koerces Kid to Kuddle Kock!
2007-01-13 22:27:33
I could just put up a link, but in a week or so it?ll become part of the premium archives, and I want this beauty preserved free before the public for all time (or at least until Live Journal goes belly-up).  From yesterday?s Herald Mail: SHARPSBURG - The former leader of the World Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, who disbanded his group in November to join the National Socialist Movement, is accused of forcing a child to perform oral sex on him.  Gordon Creal Young, 40, of 2210 Back Road in Sharpsburg, was arrested Wednesday on seven criminal counts, including two counts each of second-degree assault and sex abuse of a minor, Washington County Sheriff's Department Investigator Tara Bender said.  A deputy said Young was being held Thursday at Washington County Detention Center on $350,000 bond.  A Washington County District Court charging document alleges that Young forced a child to perform oral sex on him at his home during two separate incidents that happened about Oct. 22 and 25.  On ...
The Founding Members of the Cocksucker Hall of Fame!
2007-01-12 18:22:36
They are politicians, they are actors, they are television personalities, they are preachers; but they all have one thing in common:  they are miserable, reprehensible, irritating, annoying, pathetic examples of humanity.  They are, to coin a phrase, cocksuckers.  With the announcement of this year?s inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame earlier this week, I have been inspired to create my own hall of fame here in my little-seen corner of the blogosphere.  I open my humble tribute to the dregs of our popular culture today by enshrining ten people, men and women, who deserve to be staked to the ground and shit on by an elephant.  Whenever someone strikes me as worthy of inclusion, they?ll be inducted as well, complete with their very own commemorative plaque.  If anyone has a specific public figure in mind who they think would be perfectly suited for this honorable distinction, I?m open to suggestions.  Now, without further blathering from me, I give you the founding members of . . . ...
Why I Hate Bob Parasiliti, No. 2
2007-01-11 16:58:48
My favorite shitty-as-fuck local sportswriter, Bob Parasiliti, has had his own blog over at the Herald Mail?s website for the last two months, right under my fucking nose.  ?Parasiliti Post-ings,? it?s called.  If you?re a fellow blogger and you ever feel a pang of inadequacy about your own site, I invite you to take a look at Bob?s attempted blog and cheer yourself right the hell up.  Not only is it poorly written, the layout couldn?t be more generic and he hasn?t even bothered to finish it yet ? his About page, linked at the top, is still the WordPress template. Judging from the omnipresent misspellings and typos, the sports editor at the Herald-Mail deserves a raise; polishing Parasiliti?s semi-literate drivel to ready it for print could be a full-time job itself.  But what the fuck do I know?  I?m an unemployed college student with too much time on his hands, and Bob Parasiliti is a professional . . . writer ? excuse me, I?ve just felt a wave of nausea come over me.  I?m going to l ...
