Wireless: The new rage in notebooks
2008-04-10 06:05:34
Dell, for example is brewing up and alphabet soup of PANs and LANs to work with its notebooks. But other vendors, including Compaq C and Apple Computer , aren't far behind in their thinking. "The new wave says, how do we make these machines simpler and simpler -- with specialized functions? Wireless connectivity becomes the actual baseline," Compaq President Michael Capellas said at a European news briefing Monday. While Compaq is exploring wireless, Dell and Apple are already putting together features for their portables. Dell is learning some lessons first hand, in part because space at its Round Rock, Texas campus is at a premium. Headcount is growing so quickly some company managers have given up their office space, and now work out of conference rooms, using a wireless LAN to stay connected and up-to-date. "We have Lucent cards ... and we also have Aironet cards working in campus buildings," said Tim Peters general manager of Dell's Latitude business. "We see the ben ...
Compaq recalls batteries
2008-04-10 05:40:52
Compaq Computer is recalling some 55,000 notebook PC batteries because of a manufacturing defect. The company will replace the batteries used in Armada E500 and V300 notebook PC models due to a manufacturing defect in certain batteries supplied by Sony. Those batteries were manufactured between June 2 and July 10 of this year. "Sony identified a potential problem in the manufacturing process and alerted us about a potential defect," said Compaq spokesman Mike Hockey. "We need to make sure that these (batteries) are out of the hands of our customers." The recall, which is unrelated to a recent recall of 27,000 Sanyo notebook batteries by Dell Computer, was prompted by the failure of a single battery which short circuited, Hockey said. The short circuit caused smoke and some damage to the notebook in which the battery was being used. The failure resulted from a misdirected test pin that was supposed to be soldered to a printed circuit board inside of the battery. It was misplaced and p ...

IPHONE HACKER GETS REAL MOBILE
2008-04-05 13:58:02
The New Jersey teen who hacked the iPhone is going to get his wish - well, at least one of them. George Hotz, who last week found a way to manipulate Apple’s new cell phone so that it will work on other networks besides AT&T’s, is trading one of the two phones he hacked for a new car. And, as Hotz would put it, it’s a “sweet” one at that, a new Nissan 350Z. “This has been a great end to a great summer,” Hotz wrote on his blog. The teen said he is trading the iPhone to Terry Daidone, co-founder of CertiCell, a Louisville, Ky.-based mobile phone repair company. In exchange, Daidone is going to buy him the car and will give him three brand new iPhones, which Hotz plans to hand out to members of his informal team that helped crack the iPhone. As part of the deal, Hotz will have a paid consulting job for CertiCell. He plans to visit the company’s Kentucky offices later this week to demonstrate his iPhone hack in person. Daidone and other CertiCell officials did not re ...

Freedom Phone: How simple is too simple?
2008-04-05 13:47:47
The Freedom Phone is a concept by designer Vadim Kibardin for travelers looking for a pre-paid phone to use while abroad. It’s lightweight and sleek and has all of the information you need to know about it, such as your own number or dialing codes, printed on the back. I’m entirely for gadgets that keep things simple yet functional. I’ve never used the FM/AM tuning on any MP3 player I’ve ever owned, and I’m one of those curmudgeons who doesn’t like to mix cameras and phones. But I can readily imagine a few features that may make the Freedom Phone just a touch more friendly, like a small screen to see what numbers I’ve dialed (international dialing has rather long strings of numbers, after all), or a detachable card on the back so I can easily access my phone’s information while talking to someone ...

Budget likely to help rich states
2008-03-27 15:22:58
Enhanced expenditure on social sectors like education, health, old age pensions, and development projects and infrastructure definitely spells good news for the different States but experts say the positive impact may not be uniform with the richer states benefiting more. Senior economist Amarnath of the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy says that increase in state’s share in education programme Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan will mean that only states that can shell out the increased share (35 per cent, from 25 per cent) stand to benefit more. Although allocations have been hiked for the existing social sector and development schemes, no new ones have been announced, he added. The increased allocations for social sector are mostly state subjects — including the bonanza for agriculture — and these will have a positive impact on states, felt Mahesh Purohit, former member secretary of empowered committee of the finance ministers and director, Foundation for Public Economy a ...
Budget brings relief for senior citizens
2008-03-27 15:20:54
Old age comes with its share of problems. As a person grows older his regular source of income dries up. In such a scenario, the government is expected to lend a helping hand to the elderly. The senior citizens got some respite when the Finance Minister opened his box full of bounties and distributed the gifts in his budget presentation this year. The basic exemption limit for the senior citizen has been enhanced. The Finance Minister has raised the basic exemption limit for the senior citizens from Rs 1,95,000 to Rs 2,25,000. The change in the individual tax slabs has also resulted in a reduction in overall tax payable. An elderly man having an income of Rs 5,00,000 per annum can save an amount of Rs 39,655 on account of taxes. With more money at their disposal, they can be assured of spending the golden years of their life respectfully. The budget proposal has increased the tax exemption to an additional Rs 20,000 in case mediclaim premium has been paid for the senior citizen. This ...
India expects to add $100 bn to forex reserve
2008-03-27 15:14:39
New Delhi, January 30: At a time when managing capital flows is becoming a challenge for the authorities, the Government today said it expects to add USD 100 billion to the forex reserves in the current financial year. "We added USD 47 billion last fiscal. In 2007-08, we expect to add USD 100 billion," Finance Minister P Chidambaram said here at a lecture on 'Law - an Instrument for Economic Growth.' Overall, India's forex reserves stands at USD 284.8 billion for the week ended January 19. In this context, Chidambaram said the government's response to today's situation would be different from 1991, when India's forex reserves dipped below a billion dollars. "A few years ago, we were bemoaning our forex position. I remember (the) day in 1991... (when) the forex reserves had dipped below a billion dollars. Today, our problem is not that we do not have foreign exchange but what to do with that foreign exchange," he said. Yesterday, Chidambaram had said he would discuss with RBI Gove ...
India's forex must find a better use
2008-03-27 15:08:12
NEW YORK: India has wasted three years debating a modest proposal for diverting some of its foreign reserves to plugging the country’s abysmal infrastructure deficit. It’s only now when China is all set to carve out $200 billion from its reserves into a sovereign wealth fund that India is hastening to reach a decision on what to do with its own low-yielding cache. Finance Minister P Chidambaram said in a speech at the London Business School last week that the government has “persuaded” the Reserve Bank of India to lend $5 billion from its $212 billion kitty. The money will go to a special-purpose vehicle formed last year to enable long-gestation projects to raise funds cheaply. India urgently needs to boost investments in roads, ports, airports, power stations and railways. The latest official estimate puts the amount of funds required in these areas at a massive $475 billion over five years. Better balance Bloated order books bear testimony to serious supply co ...
The Forex Market
2008-03-27 14:59:37
For the last three decades Foreign Exchange market, - briefly Forex or FX, had integrated into the world's biggest financial market. The volume of daily transactions is about 1-3 trillion of US dollars. The trading instruments on this market are the currencies of different countries, so the fluctuation of currency's rates allows to gain a real profit. Of course monetary assets of different countries exchanged since the term money appeared as well as an idea to obtain profit from currency's rates difference. Now it is not a new idea, but the transformation of foreign exchange market to the modern stage with an opportunity to conduct conversional operations of such volumes arose only after an introduction of floating ra ...
HCL Prism Laptop
2008-03-23 01:29:38
Notebook PC sales are quite unevenly distributed, with a majority going to three topplayers. That's why it's going to take other manufacturers more than just a pretty design to sell some units. HCL's Prism is called so because of the unique design of the top cover. While the design drew mixed reactions from onlookers; some liked it and some absolutely detested it, the shiny plastic finish inside and out is what spoilt the show. It was just too reflective and a major magnet for fingerprints. It does have plus points though. It's a 12.1-inch size, which means it's quite portable. It comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB RAM and a160 GB hard drive, which means that performance won't be too shabby considering it comes into an ultraportable class. The big HCL Leaptop sticker on the palm rest isan eyesore and you should remove it immediately.Features include Bluetooth, WiFi, webcam with built-in mic and a DVD writer. Connect¬ivity was adequate, with 3 USB ports, Firewire, VGA ...
