2007-06-06 13:34:00
WD's biggest notebook drive gets enclosed In addition to shipping its 750 GB Caviar drive this week, WD is also sending out its new 250 GB Passport portable drives. While WD?s MyBook line will give the user more storage space, it also does so at the cost of a larger form factor. WD Passports use 2.5-inch hard drives, allowing for their plug-and-play, ultra-portable design. WD announced last month that its launch of the 250 GB Scorpio notebook hard drive ? a product that paved the way for the latest Passport. "The rich, storage-hungry media content generated by 10 mega-pixel digital cameras and HD video camcorders makes the one-quarter terabyte WD Passport Drive a compelling solution," said Jim Welsh, vice president and general manager of WD's branded products group. "WD Passport is a travel-friendly gadget for consumers who want to carry their entire digital portfolio with them." Estimated pricing for the WD Passport Portable Drive 250 GB is $199, or roughly the same p ...
MSI Brings Turbo Back
2007-06-06 13:22:00
MSI GX-600 notebook reintroduces the turbo button Earlier today MSI demonstrated the new GX600 gaming notebook at Computex 2007. The GX600 packs quite a few features into its welterweight 5.7lb package. But arguably the best feature on the GX600 is the Turbo Drive Engine technology. When the GX600 is plugged in with AC power, the push of the turbo button automatically turns on Acceleration Mode. Acceleration Mode increases the processor?s front-side bus and raises the overall clock speed by 20%. A quick press of the button a second time returns the processor back to stock clock speeds. Intel?s recently announced Santa Rosa platform forms the base of the MSI GX600. The MSI GX600 features Intel?s PM965 Express chipset, a Core 2 Duo processor and 802.11n wireless networking technology. A GeForce 8600M GT graphics card delivers DirectX 10 compatible graphics. MSI equips the GeForce 8600M GT mobile graphics with 512MB of video memory. MSI pairs the GeForce 8600M GT with a 15. ...
GM Awards Battery Contracts For Chevy Volt
2007-06-06 13:06:00
The Chevrolet Volt moves closer to production Although there were some previous concerns over the feasibility of General Motors' Chevrolet Volt electric car, it appears the company is ready to charge ahead with production. GM is making the necessary steps to ensure that the Volt makes use of best available battery technology to achieve its project goals -- something that Toyota is having a few problems with right now. The company announced yesterday that 13 companies sent in proposals regarding the advanced lithium-ion batteries used to power the Volt. When the dust settled, two companies were selected. The first contract was awarded to Compact Power (a subsidiary of LG Chem) while the second contract went to Continental Automotive Systems. "The signing of these battery development contracts is an important next step on the path to bring the Volt closer to reality," said GM Chairman and CEO, Rick Wagoner. "Given the huge potential that the Volt and its E-Flex system offer ...
Honda to Use Clean Diesel Instead of Hybrid Powertrain For Next Accord
2007-06-06 12:58:00
The next-generation U.S. market Accord will ditch its hybrid powertrain for a clean diesel When it comes to building ultra-efficient cars for the U.S. auto market, most manufacturers are going in one of two directions. You have some that go the compact route with small 4-cylinder engines and those who choose hybrid technology which can be found in compact and mid-sized sedans. A third alternative, diesel, has floundered for the past two decades in U.S. passenger cars. Volkswagen -- which in the past offered diesel versions of its Passat, New Beetle, Golf and Jetta in the U.S. -- has no diesel passenger cars for the 2007 model year due to tighter emissions regulations. In fact, the only new car available with a diesel engine in the United States is the Mercedes E320 BlueTec -- but that vehicle starts at a heart-stopping $51,550 USD. Honda looks to change things, however, with its next generation Accord family sedan. Honda's Accord has been one of the best selling cars in ...

Shoulder Bag Ghetto Blaster
2007-06-06 12:24:00
Somewhere in the early 80's, the ghetto blaster came up as a part of street culture, today it's gone and people settle for cell phones, iPods and their miniature earplugs. All this can't replace the experience of a real ghetto blaster. That was reason enough to re launch and redesign it as an extension for existing sound sources like the iPod. The uncommon shape has 2 reasons:First, high-end sound quality. The 'head' of the blaster provides space for a large bass speaker, and the long narrow end of the horn-like (thus, audiophile) shape serves as a bass reflex tube. Second, the shape allows for perfect wearing comfort: as the blaster has a belt, there are two ways to carry the blaster around, on your shoulder or on your hip, like a shoulder bag.Designer: Dirk Winkel ...

Intel's 975X Expess gets the "Bearlake" upgrade Intel will unveil the high-end version of its Bearlake-family next month ? the Intel X38 Express. The new Intel X38 Express replaces the 975X Express, which launched over a year ago with Intel?s Presler Netburst processors. The new chipset introduces new features to Intel?s high-end enthusiast and workstation platform such as PCIE 2.0 and DDR3 memory.New to the Intel X38 Express is support for dual full-speed PCIe 2.0 x16 slots. The dual PCIe 2.0 slots are compatible with AMD?s CrossFire technology for multi-GPU graphics processing. Motherboard manufacturers are also free to equip Intel X38 Express based boards with a third physical PCIe 2.0 x16 for triple-play physics. Due to chipset limitations, the third physical PCIe 2.0 x16 slot has lesser lanes, with most manufacturers opting for four lanes.DDR3 is the only officially supported memory for the Intel X38 Express. Intel touts DDR3-1333 memory for X38 Express motherboards. DDR2 ...

A flight simulator at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex; union strike; and results from the DEPTHX robotic vehicle The Deep Phreatic Thermal Explorer (DEPTHX) has reached the bottom of the world's deepest sinkhole. According to researchers involved with the project, the robotic vehicle was able to explore 318 meters below the surface, a depth never met before. The El Zacaton sinkhole, the world's deepest, does not have any tunnels or underwater connections with other sinkholes in the area.NASA wants the Stone Aerospace robot to search Europa, one of Jupiter's icy moons. The depth and reliability tests in Earth's deepest sinkhole were a crucial step towards a possible trip to Europa.Understanding only a very small number of carefully chosen, highly qualified people get to take a trip on the space shuttle, NASA recently opened a launch simulator for the general public. The $60-million simulator opened up last week at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The ...
Durlet Spin Armchair
2007-06-05 09:30:00
It should be small and compact, the new armchair for Durlet from Belgium. The result of the cooperation between Durlet and designer Alfredo Haberli is really impressive. Here the designer formally embarks on totally new approaches and with this model has even fulfilled his own personal wish. Because, in his opinion, there has up to now been a complete lack of small seating units for everyday routine - as complements to the sofa, combined with a table in the waiting area or as a duo in a long corridor. Striking features are the clear style and skillfully applied design characteristics such as the over-hanging, soft seating area in contrast to the frame's striking H-shape.Designer: Alfredo Haberli [ Manufacturer: Durlet ] ...

iPhone Release Date Officially Set for June 29
2007-06-04 13:09:00
Mark your calendars, the iPhone is coming on June 29 The Apple iPhone, this year?s most anticipated piece of consumer kit, is officially dated for release on June 29. Until now, Apple and wireless carrier partner AT&T had remained non-committal on a firm release date, saying only that the iPhone would ship in late June. The date trickled out over the weekend as commercials hit the television networks. The ads may also be viewed directly from the Apple website. The three 30-second TV spots are simplistic, single-shot scenes showing a user?s hands operating the iPhone. The commercials heavily emphasize the device?s touch screen and the way that the display is viewed both in portrait and landscape views. One of the commercials even concentrates on all the things that the iPhone can do that Apple?s best selling music player cannot ? perhaps in a strange example of product cannibalization. At the end of each spot is the reveal of the June 29 launch date, along with the AT& ...
