Indoor Teambuilding Activities
2007-07-22 12:50:57
If we use the newspaper industry as an example of team based organizations, we can see a rapid growth in the use of teams in newspaper companies dating back to the 1990s. Only 8 percent of managing editors said their newspapers had started the use of teams by 1992. Thirty-five newspapers started teams in the next three years so that by 1995, 28 percent of newspapers were using some form of teams. Thirteen more papers said they had started teams by 1998, and 11 said they planned to start teams within the next year. If that happened, 42 percent of newspapers would have had teams at the end of 1999. With this rapid growth in the use of teams, many companies are looking for team activities which will have an impact on bonding, trust, problem solving and communication. Some companies have had great success in using some of the team building packages. One particular teambuilding package that I came across is “Trouble on the Inca Trail” with an IT group. Another great teambuilding ...

Company Social Events: The Office Pool Party
2007-06-21 19:33:20
A prestigous physician organization is having a pool party at his home on a weekend. I am relatively new with this organization and manage one of the dept. I am finding myself in the middle of a values debate. There are staff who (like myself) feel it is inappropriate to socialize on personal time with subordinates and co-workers. There are other staff who are very excited about going to the bosses’ house and talk about the bikinis they are going to wear, etc. While I have declined the invitation on the premise that I have other plans, I think this is a sexual harassment lawsuit waiting to happen. In addition, I have worked so hard to have a professional image at work that I cannot imagine either seeing my subordinates, co-workers, and boss in swimming “attire” or having them see me in such a personal state of undress. (Yes, I am modest, but have my share of swimming suits that I wear around friends and family ). How can I assist those staff who are feeling pressured ...
Motivating Your Team Members To Think Progressively
2007-06-20 14:39:05
It is time for a change. Much of the same practices that were developed years ago are still around today. The typical employee continues to keep the blinders on and refuses to aknowledge that the world outside ours indeed does exist! We clock punchers instead quality experts. Motivating an employee seems to always come back to money…while I agree this is important, I also recognize that the future stability of our jobs and our company is the most important as it is what feeds us and our families. How do you get your team members motivated to think progressively? While management at many companies might already be pushing this, there is much resistance to change. Leadership. Inspirational and trustworthy leadership with a vision that includes all can work wonders for you. If you don’t have it at your company, then it’s an uphill battle. Built to Last by Collins and Porras would be a good starting point. Good to Great by the same two authors might also be worthwhile re ...
Team Building Excercises For 06-19-2007
2007-06-20 14:15:45
A really simple team building excercise for team members is to have members of your work team pair off into teams of two and stare at each other for about a minute. Upon completion, ask either one or both participants some questions about the other person - what colour shoes were worn, type of glasses, hairstyle etc. Once this is done, ask the person who was being observed to speak about how they felt being observed and what they received from the observer’s body language. You can take this down the road of intended meaning by one party and how receptive the other parties were. ...
