Chengdu vs. Chongqing: Logistics Hub(s) of the Southwest
2007-11-15 18:29:23
While working on some research for a report, I interviewed a member of the Chengdu foreign investment bureau to better understand why foreign firms in general were choosing Chengdu, what the obstacles were, and what the future looked like..
Of the 20 or so questions we went over, one of my favorites was in response to my question
“Chengdu or Chongqing… which city will be the logistics hub of China’s southwest?”
to which my interviewee responded:
This question should be answered in different terms. In terms of air and land transportation, we Chengdu shall be taken as the hub in Southwestern China. But if it is in terms of water transportation, no doubt that Chongqing is the hub.
Looking at the map, and you can immediately see why Chongqing is the water hub. The Yangtze splits the city in half.
What I find interesting though is that from the perspective of this representative, and others in logistics & manufacturing, is that Chongqing’s real comparabl ...

Paulson: China, Yuan Out-of-Step With markets..
2007-11-14 07:26:44
In yet another attempt to put pressure on China to revalue the RMB, Secretary Paulson is out on his stump.. and I am beginning to wonder if perhaps he is off his rocker as I hardly see how rising interest rates in the U.S. (see below) is going to improve the situation in the States….
Correct me if I am wrong, but putting pressure on China to “appropriately value” the RMB could lead lead to higher interest rates and inflation in the US should they actually take his advice and knock the RMB to say 6.50USD …. and with the U.S. economy teetering on a recession driven by an inability of people to pay back their debt..
After all, the mear suggestion that China was looking at diversifying their portfolio away from “weaker curriencies” (USD) into “stronger curriencies” (Euro, Yen… Peso) sent the dollar reeling to all time low against Euro and a couple of other currencies.

Trade Surplus Hits US$27 Billion in October
2007-11-13 11:12:55
Record trade figures no longer surprise. They are right up their with the stock market and property prices! The latest figures show China’s trade surplus reached a record US$27 billion in October. Malaysia Star reports:
“China’s trade surplus rose to a record US$27.05bil in October, adding fuel to US complaints yuan is undervalued as Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson prepares for an economic summit in Beijing next month.
The gap increased 13.5% from a year earlier, the customs bureau said on its website yesterday.
The yuan’s appreciation versus the dollar accelerated last week to the fastest since China ditched a fixed exchange rate in July 2005.
The 0.6% gain took the appreciation since the end of the dollar peg to 11.6%. Larger increases ease the inflow of cash that threatens to stoke inflation already close to a decade’s high.
… Imports jumped to US$80.7bil, while exports rose 22.3% to US$107.7bil.

Employ Anyone in China? Employ a Lawyer!
2007-11-13 11:12:54
The Labour Law has been bubbling away as an issue for some time, but now that it is almost upon us, calls to action are starting to be heard. One of the louder (and always well-informed) voices can be found on China Law Blog:
China’s New Labor Law — It’s A Huge Deal. Huge I Tell You.
“Everything is going to change on January 1, 2008, for employers in China. Well almost everything. That is the day China’s new labor law goes into effect and if you have employees in China (especially if you “unofficially” have employees in China), you absolutely must take various steps to get into compliance AND to avoid being sued. And you better start taking those steps now…”
See the full article here. It also contains a link to an English language version of the new Labour Law.

Stampeding to Regulation
2007-11-13 11:12:51
While foreign retailers are making inroads in China, harsh lessons are being learnt when things go wrong and consumers react in unexpected ways. Xinhua reports on a tragic accident - and the rush to regulate:
“China’s Ministry of Commerce issued an urgent circular on Monday banning time-limited sales promotions in shops following a deadly stampede at a Carrefour outlet.
Three people died and 31 were injured in a stampede triggered by a sales promotion at a Carrefour outlet on Nov. 10 in the country’s southwestern Chongqing Municipality.
The three-day promotion at a hypermarket in the city’s Shapingba District was launched to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the French retail giant’s entry into the city.
The shop offered an 11.5 yuan (1.5 U.S. dollars) savings from the original price of 51.4 yuan for a five-liter bottle of edible oil. When it opened its doors for business throngs of people swarmed in and a mass stampede began. “

China Mobile Eyes iPhone Deal
2007-11-13 10:19:37
According to a premarket release on The Street, Apple is reportedly in talks with China Mobile to bring the iPhone to China (a lot of people already have one).
First, as an investor in Apple all I can say is BUY BUY BUY. give one to your friends, collegues, and don’t forget your boss!
Next, I am actually quite surprised China was behind the E.U. in the cycle. Now, for my E.U. readers, I apologize but for me China just makes more sense. First, they are being produced here (see iPhone: Made In Shenzhen, Assembled by Foxconn), and their partner Foxconn (see Foxconn: Behind the Scenes) is fully capable of producing for the China market. Second, China is a MUCH larger market than any of the E.U. markets on their own.
Sure, I have no doubt that negotiating this deal has been interesting to say the least, and I am being a bit selffish by saying they should have released here first… but all that being said, Apple has a “bright future” in China once China Mobi ...

CHaINA’s 2007 China Supply 20
2007-11-13 10:19:36
For those of you who are stil not reading Chaina, take the opportunity now to reduce you carbon foot print and expand your knowledge and download the November/ December edition now.
This edition is particularly important for me as All Roads was included in the 2007 China Supply Chain 20:
Over the course of the past 12 months, one website has emerged as probably the single most observant and insightful source of China-related supply chain orientated stories and analysis.
Ironically enough, it was about 9 months ago when I first met Michael as City Diner in Shanghai. It was during the Chinese New YEar holiday, and we both typing away on our laptops… I was writing up something for All Roads, he was planning CHaINA’s second edition.
So, for me if there was a publication that did more for supply chain in 2007 than anyone else, it was CHaINA itself. The magazine is well written, covers a huge amount of territory.. and offers a carbon friendly version online. Like starting up ...

Tianjin Economic Development Zone News: Issue 70
2007-11-13 10:19:33
Perhaps it is because I have a project in Tianjin, or perhaps it is because they saw the news from Chengdu, I have just received the newsletter below from the good folks over at the Tianjin Economic Development Zone (TEDA). I tried to put links to further sources, but only one source shows in the English press.

ChinaSolved unfair to Salespeople!
2007-11-13 08:10:22
Chinasolved needs to come clean about something. We are blatantly unfair to the sales staffs that we train and manage.
As your sales team grows, you will be faced with some difficult choices. Many long-term expats come to feel that fairness should be their moral compass when deciding on issues like […] Read Original Post Here

Alibaba IPOs, Curious George & Aqua Dots, Rudy’s China Platform, & Yahoo Gets Blasted
2007-11-12 20:16:53
Alibaba IPOs
While Alibaba is a company I have covered before, and this was probably one of the most OVERHYPED stories of the week, it was an event I did not have time to cover. In the end, Alibaba raised 1.5 billion USD and nearly tripled in its first day… or a whopping 155 times earnings. My opinion, if you are holding… sell now. 155 p/e is just a bit more than reality calls for, and while Jack is no on a roll, I still question the ability of Jack to monetize some of his core products.
Curious George and Aqua Dots Recalled
it appears that not only is Curious George (manufactured by Hasbro) joining the 2007 line of lead painted toys, but that there are now toxic beads on the market that if swallowed will cause a chemical reaction that results in gamma-hydroxy butyrate. go figure.. they are called Aqua Dots and have a bit of a 70s motif on their packaging… Parents, please return these immediately, and … don’t get any funny ideas about slipping these in ...

Feeling Restricted in China?
2007-11-12 13:16:27
In my nearly 6 years in China, it has been incredible to see the interest in China (and the money that followed) skyrocket. It is a topic that I find myself having more and more as friends talk about how easy it was 5 years ago to buy apartments, as we speak to government officials who are becoming picky about the sectors they are interested in, and with companies who were once dying to meet VCs but are now turning them away because of the glut of domestic capital that can be found.
In the international press, the result of this trend is China being called nationalistic and closed up, but what it really is is a maturing of the economy and the investment profile of China.
and should it come as any surprise? They had been accepting 60 billion USD a year for the last 5 years…
All that aside the recent changes in the investment guidelines for me did hold a couple of interesting surprises. not because I think that these sectors necessarily should be encouraged, but because what I ...

6 Minute ABS on a 3 USD DVD
2007-11-12 06:16:06
2 years back a foreginer names Randy Gutherie was made headlings when he was arrested for his part in the company 2 Dollar DVDs. It was an operation run from his apartment in Shanghai… and he was making bank!
We’ll, just 2 years later, it appears that Paramount and Warner Brothers are now going to be offering legal copies of DVDs in China for just 3 USD. 3 USD ….
according to the article, the studios will be working together because their common goal is to defeat DVD pirates
Both Warner Bros. and Paramount say that this will be the earliest release date and lowest price that their movies have ever been sold for, worldwide. And their reason for teaming up with one another is strategic: they are competing against piracy in China, not each other. The more legit movies that are available in one spot, the more attractive the outlets will become to prospective buyers. “We’re committed to developing a legitimate market in China, and having two more H ...
