Ascendas China is Looking For Funds
2007-08-13 13:40:35
Following the piece on Prologis last week, it was a bit fortuitous that we would see an article in today’s Shanghai daily announcing Ascendas’s plan to raise nearly a billion USD.
For those that are not familiar with Ascendas, it is a Singaporean REIT with close ties to the Singaporean Government. Where Prologis was an early mover in the warehousing/ 3pl facility secotr, Ascendas (through their ties to the Suzhou Investment Park) went for the build to suit facility sector.. and it has paid dividends.
Much like Prologis, the Ascendas developments are world class (I will make trip next week to visit one of the Suzhou facilities), and though they initially had high hurdle rate expectations and were hated by all the big real estate firms Ascendas has done well expanding into other projects in Dalian, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Shenzhen, Suzhou, Tianjin, and Xi’an
And given their interest in raising a billion USD, the list is sure to include other cities (Chengdu, Chongqing, and ...

New Poll: Expats in China - Please Apply? Or Please Leave?
2007-08-13 13:40:34
HR in China is always a challendge, and the last few years has brought an enormous amount of foreign talent to China, some good and some not.
In the wake of the recent product scandals and failed investments I am curious … are expats still in demand, or is a change coming? Are expats part of the problem, or are they needed more than ever?
If you would like to elaborate, please do so in our comments section.

Faces of China Future, Beijing Lung, and How to Get Around the G F W
2007-08-13 13:40:33
While I do not have my RSS feeds up and running at 100% yet, I thought I would share three blog posts that really set themselves apart this week. If you have an article, blog post, or report you think should be highlighted, please let me know. I cannot promise it will make the cut, but I will do my best to read it!
Society Snapshot: Faces of the Future
For those who are interested in the future of China, and its little emperors and little empresses, I highly suggest reading this post. While only a few pages long, this post introduced at three issues that China will face over the next 20 years or so: food availability vs obesity in China, little emperors vs. aging population, free education for all. Far short of answering the critical questions, the strength of this post lies in keeping it simple and peaking the interest of readers. For those looking to sell into China, this is a post for you.

CNN Report: Made in China
2007-08-13 13:40:33
With all the media attention on the recent recalls and food safety, it should come as no surprise that something would end up on Youtube. I am just surprised that CNN’s half hour program “Made in China” made it on.
John Vause and his colleagues in the U.S. and E.U. developed a program looking at the recent spat of products safety issues to enlighten viewers as to the scale of the problems, the underlying issues, how the “made in China” brand has been affected, and what consumers need to know when buying goods made in China.
Part 1 (11:35min)
The first few minutes really sets a tone for what the next 23 minutes has in store. China is growing, and growing fast. It is under a lot of pressures, things are going wrong, and it is now the world is questioning are “are those products safe”???

2007-08-13 13:40:31
In doing some research on the currency bill (post coming soon), the actors behind the movement, and the underlying issues, I cam across tow documents that are must reads: Seven Myths about U.S. - China Trade and Investment authored by the U.S. China Business Council and Facing Protectionism Generated by Trade Disputes authored by Wing Thye Woo and Geng Xiao of Brookings Institute.Seven Myths about U.S. - China Trade and Investment (PDF download here) is a simple 2 pages that breaks with members of the administration

July’s Trade Surplus Surge
2007-08-13 11:51:25
The trade surplus continues to rise, with another hot month in July. According to Bloomberg:
“China’s trade surplus surged 67 percent in July to the second-highest on record, bolstering U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson’s case for a faster appreciation of the yuan.
The gap widened to $24.4 billion from $14.6 billion a year earlier, the General Administration of Customs said today on its Web site. That was more than the $23.1 billion median estimate of 18 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News…
The National Development and Reform Commission, China’s top economic planning agency, forecasts the trade surplus will widen to a record $250 billion to $300 billion this year, up from $177.5 billion in 2006.”
The article also notes that:
• The economy grew at 11.9 percent in the second quarter
• Inflation may have reached 5.6 percent in July
• The stock market (CSI 300 stock index) has risen by 130 percent this year
It seems that interest rate rises, export ...

Struggling Giant (And Other Summer Reads)
2007-08-13 11:51:24
Kerry Brown* of China Power List fame has recently published a new book, Struggling Giant, and was promoting it with a talk in London recently. A brief introduction to the book (which, I understand was almost, rather bravely, called China Does Not Exist), is provided by the author below:
Struggling Giant starts off with mapping out what a stable and unstable China might look like in two decades time. Both present challenges. The one will be the world’s largest economy, a superpower and an remorseless user of energy resources. The other will be highly decentralised, a cause of tension and conflict in the region and globally, and a negative draw on the world’s resources and stablility.
It then looks at where China might go, by looking at what has happened in its recent past, and what clues might lie there - in the Cultural Revolution, in the lingering influence of Mao Zedong, and in the remarkable ability of the Communist Party to transform and change itself, yet still h ...

Sex and China
2007-08-13 06:39:58
A couple of weeks ago, I was with a bunch of friends and cousins at KTV place in Shenzhen, singing kareoke. Although I dont do that much singing (i’m a drinker at these things), I did notice something very interesting.
In between when songs are played, there are different ads and commericals displayed on the monitors throughout. These are usually promotional material for various drinks or cars. However, one really stood out to me.
It was a 10 second ad that featured, what I thought, was a cartoon figure shaped like a condom with disclaimers. At first, I didn’t really understand it, but after conferring with my Chinese cousins, I figured out what was going on.
It was an ad for condom use and awareness for HIV/Aids. The ad basically wanted everyone to use condoms, and stated that the KTV places would distrbute them for free to any of its patrons.Wow, I thought… some KTV.
So, it looks like it’s working.
When issues of human rights, politics and censorship comes u ...

China Raises the Stakes, A Comrade in Arms, and USCBC Export Stats
2007-08-12 09:36:29
China threatens to trigger US dollar crash @ Daily Telegraph
this article (and other like it) are inflammatory, assuming a lot, meant to sub salt in open sores, and are generally something I would dismiss as just another ad generator (China bashing is popular)… but this article (and others like it) are important for everyone in the U.S., in China, Sourcing from China, selling into China, or has a U.S. dollar denominated asset, and it is because China will flush the dollar down the drain, but because the RMB is gaining strength, and by studying the worst case scenario, executives will be able to plan for the steady she goes scenario.
Personal Responsibility in China Exporting @ Silk Road International
For the last few weeks, I have begun feeling a bit lonely in my views that firms need to start accepting the fact that they are responsible for maintaining the integrity of their supply chain, and their brand. However, Silk Road has come out with a very well written, and well balanc ...
