Direct from the Hong Kong fair !
2007-09-24 01:33:58
Completing my previous posts on Canton fair, here is a word from the Hong Kong Electronic & Components fair, where AsiaInspection is exhibiting this year for the first time (after having exhibited at other HK fairs the previous years). The fair is organized by Globalsources, the leading online platform “connecting global buyers and suppliers”, who by the way happens to have the same graphical chart than AI (red, black & grey)! It takes place at AsiaWorld Expo, a new exhibition center opened in 2006 in Hong Kong, built conveniently near the International Airport and offering an additional 70,000 sqm space for exhibitions to relieve the “old” HK Convention Center located on the Hong Kong island. After more than 10 years visiting these Asian fairs I am still dazzled by the atmosphere you feel there, and how these events make you sense, in a very tangible way, the 10% economic growth of China ! Child Labor : still a long way to go …
2007-09-24 01:33:58
Given the business I am in with AsiaInspection, I can only react to the news of Beijing Olympic Games merchandises being manufactured by Chinese rogue factories employing children…There is a highly symbolic value to this news, which brings together 2 of the most popular topics, one positive and one negative, when it comes to China. Moreover, the story comes to light, quite ironically, when yesterday was the official World Day against Child Labor. This is obviously a highly-debated subject, but I still find it interesting that Olympics officials can tell reporters about the factories involved: "They have told us they did not employ child labor at all"… Told us ?? In my opinion, the least they should have done,  when they knew the whole world was watching every of their steps, and when they are supposed to convey positive ethical values through the Olympic spirit, was to order / impose a proper Social Audit program on all suppliers & factories involved ...
Chinese cars land in Europe !
2007-09-24 01:33:57
… and they are not cheap ! Brilliance, the main Chinese car manufacturer (who also produces BMW cars for local market) has made a discrete but noticeable entry at the Geneva 77th Motor Show this week, with 3 car models on display. The 500 first cars from the production line in Shenyang, will arrive this month in Germany to be distributed through European retailers. The story is interesting, with the involvement of many European automotive suppliers in the project, and the design done by an Italian firm : according to Brilliance themselves, the cars they will sell in Europe are already “quite European”; for this line of products, where quality is everything, coming from China does not, for once, necessarily give you a competitive advantage. It took about 15 years to Japanese cars to settle definitely in Europe : will China do better ? Read Original Post Here ...
All bets are on with China gambling craze !
2007-09-24 01:33:56
I read earlier this week about how Macau’s gaming revenue surged 22% in 2006, surpassing for the first time the Las Vegas (where AsiaInspection will exhibit next week - by the way…) as the world’s biggest casino market. Seven new casinos opened in Macau last year, bringing the total to 24. The number of gaming tables doubled in the period to 2,762, according to Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau. And this trends seems here to stay : in total, 2.2 billion people live within five hours’ flying time of Macau, compared with 410 million in the same radius of Las Vegas. I have always been intruiged and fascinated to see how Chinese people can be both disciplined, hard working, and at the same time crazy about gambling, to an extent we seldom see in Western countries… Read Original Post Here ...
Direct from the Factory - episode 5
2007-09-24 01:33:54
After a short period of silence (for which I apologize - business is business…), I give you a new episode of our Factory Inspections ! We are in Chengyang, Shandong, and our inspector was brought to the “packing line” where he found working conditions and processes not exactly up to the client’ standards ! Although we see conditions in factories globally improve in major industrial areas, remote areas seem slow to catch up… Read Original Post Here ...
World Economic Forum on Youtube
2007-09-23 19:04:52
From September 6-8 the World Economic Forum held its meeting of New Champions in Dalian, which is one of China’s newest champions… for investment. A testament to the power of Web 2.0, and the power of the internet, the entire summit has been put on Youtube, at the World Economic Forum Youtube Channel. With 22 videos, roughly 20 hours of showing, one would need a weekend of non-stop broadband and Starbucks to watch the entire summit worth of videos…. However, I do suggest spending some time watching those that you feel are most pertinent to your organization or your own interest. Overall, the discussions themselves are very interesting, and if there is one theme that I see throughout is that the level of Chinese panelists was much higher than the foreign side (on average). As Rebecca McKinnon pointed out in her analysis of the Soft Power debate, Thomas Friedman was out of his element.. and his comfort zone…. and he was not the only one. As I have spoken on ...

Shenzhen YouTube Models
2007-09-23 12:04:47
I’m sorry for not posting recently. I’ve been really busy with a number of projects. I’ve also been traveling a lot on business trips. Blogspot has also been re-blocked by the great firewall sooo… ugh. Anyways, to kick back posting, I wanted to show everyone a Shenzhen video on Youtube. While there are normally thousands and thousands of videos from the west, Chinese content is rarely posted. This is definitely a needle in a haystack… Talk about Shenzhen “model” culture… Read Original Post Here ...

China’s national income per capita ranks it among middle-income countries
2007-09-23 00:49:06
www.chinanews.cn Chinanews, Beijing, Sept 19 – Over the past five years, in terms of total economic volume China’s ranking in the world has moved from the previous sixth to the fourth position now. Its national income per capita has now ranked China among middle-income countries in the world, according to a report released by the National Statistics Bureau on Tuesday. The national income per capita in China has almost doubled over the past five years. In terms of national income per capita ranking China had moved from the 132th position in 2002 to the 129th position in 2006. According to the categorization issued by the World Bank, China has changed from a low-income country to a middle-income country. According to official information, if inflation is allowed for, Chinese urban residents’ disposable income has grown by more than 7% year on year over the past four years. By the end of 2006, the total savings of Chinese urbani ...
Yuan strengthens after US rate cut
2007-09-22 12:48:32
(Source: Chinadaily) Sept. 20 - RMB strengthened against the US dollar on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve cut the prime interest rate by 50 basis points on Tuesday. Before trading started on Wednesday morning, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the yuan midpoint at 7.5170 against the greenback, compared with 7.5266 on the previous day. The yuan may rise or fall 0.5 percent from the mid-point each day. Analysts attributed the rise in the yuan’s value to a weaker US dollar. The Fed cut the federal funds rate charged on overnight loans between banks to 4.75 percent from 5.25 percent, exerting a downward pressure on the US currency. The Fed’s move put China’s central bank in a difficult position, some analysts said. The PBOC is under pressure to raise the interest rate one or two more times by the end of this year to put inflation in check, while the Fed is widely expected to further cut the federal funds rate at its next ...
Mattel Apologize to China… TO CHINA!
2007-09-22 07:58:22
It is funny how 6 weeks can make all the difference, and how villians today can be vindicated through time. Well, China… take your victory lap! Maybe I am going making too much of it, but the fact that the COO of Mattel recently apologized to senior leaders of China for the recent recalls (and their failure to properly assess the responsibility) must be a huge boost to Beijing who has contended all along that the majority of recalls were design related. Now.. if only FTS would come out and take responsibility for their products…. Read Original Post Here ...
A couple of weeks in Review
2007-09-22 07:58:21
It has been a few weeks since the roundup, and whlie it is tempting to make up for lost time and list 10 of the most interesting articles and reports for you, I am going to keep it to 5. however, I must apologize that these are more than a week of the press… so, at risk of writing about out of date topics, here are 5 of the most relevant and topical articles/ publications I have seen lately.. White Collar Photo Gate h/t to ESWN for bringing this story to light…. It is a story that really makes me wonder why expats are often unable to exercise any common sense while in China. The topic isn’t new…. Executive MNC gets involved with young woman working (Senior Executive Assistant) within the company. Nothing new in China… nothing shocking… but extremely idiotic. Especially when someone hacks the accounts, plasters the pictures of the girl all over the internet, and the mob starts looking for heads. My guess is that this issue will reach HQ, and some ...
Mattel Apologizes to China!
2007-09-21 23:06:02
A shameful kow-tow. “Our reputation has been damaged lately by these recalls,” Thomas Debrowski, Mattel’s executive vice president of worldwide operations, told China’s quality watchdog chief, Li Changjiang, in the Chinese capital. Mattel takes full responsibility for these recalls and apologizes personally to you, the Chinese people and all of our customers who received the toys.” “But it’s important for everyone to understand that the vast majority of those products that we recalled were the result of a design flaw in Mattel’s design, not through a manufacturing flaw in Chinese manufacturers.” As of 1300 UTC on the date of this posting, the Mattel website does not display any such statement. Beware, all ye who dare to accuse. UPDATE (2100 UTC): Even the Wall Street Journal, that supposed bastion of the free market ideal, and its interviewees miss the point entirely: it also would also seem logical for Mattel officials to take a ...

New Poll: VAT Rebate Removal - What’s Your Impact?
2007-09-21 03:56:26
While the removal of the VAT rebate at the end of this year is purely rumor at this point, the fact is that at some point it will be removed. For some that will mean the removal of a rebate for up to 17% of their material costs, and that could lead to signigicantly reduced profits for exporters. So, the question is. what impact would the removal of the VAT rebate have on your operations? Would it take you out of the market? Would your customers absorb the cost? Is your market share big enough to hold pricing and wipe off a few competitors? Let us know. And if you don’t know… I suggest you clear the schedule of your accountant, CFO, Sales Manager, and production team. Because it isn’t a matter of if, it is a matter of when.
