Redefining FDI
2007-12-09 17:11:53
Last year there was a lot of debate within China about the role of foreign investors in China (there were even suggestions that some foreign investors were “malicious” and were a danger to China’s long-term development). Now, after tax incentives for foreign investors have already been addressed, and as protectionist tendencies have been seen lurking, AFP reports that: “China has released new rules to prohibit or limit foreign investment in key industries as it seeks to cool its overheated economy and clean up its damaged environment, state press reported Thursday. In a wide-ranging directive published late Wednesday, China’s key economic developmental agency identified sectors from real estate and financials to oil and rare metals as restricted or off limits to foreign capital. Overseas investment that can help China to protect the environment, cut pollution and develop renewable energy will be encouraged, according to the National Development and Reform Commission sta ...
Ranking of the countries in respect to trade logistics
2007-12-09 17:07:35
I think a while ago I had a post about the World Bank`s recent ranking of the countries in respect to trade logistics and the situation in Africa. Well, here you can see the full ranking. The countries have been evaluated in criteria such as customs, infrastructure, international shipments, logistics competence, tracking and tracing, etc. As it is clear from the chart, Singapore now stands in first position. No wonder why Dell wants to move its SCM headquarter to Singapore (beside being near to China). Other interesting observations are the ones related to Sweden (4), U.S. (14), China, India and Chile. See article. Source: Supplychainer ...

Extending social responsibility to the whole value chain: Supplier ethics audit
2007-12-09 17:07:18
It was a while since I last read a REALLY new thing in supply chain but today I read a piece in Supply and Demand Chain Executive which was quite interesting and like the new blood in my veins!! The article was covering a recent research by the consultancy firm Integrity Interactive about ethics management through the supply chain. The Integrity Interactive`s September 2007 survey of 75 Global 2000 companies found that 86 percent of companies do not include suppliers in their company code of conduct, and nearly 60 percent were not sure if their company regularly assessed ethics risks in the supply chain. Many enterprises around the world are unaware of how effective supply chain ethics and compliance programs can help them avoid costly recalls and brand damage that results from a supply chain ethics scandal. Unfortunately so far, the demand for organized SEM programs is being driven by government regulators and consumers. The changes include stronger import/export standards, product ...
The partnership between Andlor and FreeFlow to enhance reverse logistics capabilities
2007-12-09 17:07:09
Among the partnership news from last week, one notable one was between FreeFlow, a provider of inventory asset management services, and Andlor, a provider of reverse logistics software for manufacturers, distributors and third party logistics providers. The partnership pairs FreeFlow's award-winning solution for dispositioning returned, excess and obsolete inventory with Andlor's growing roster of customers that depend on its technology to manage the end-to-end process for returned products in the reverse logistics pipeline. Traditionally, OEMs view reverse logistics for returned goods as a cost center, a necessary evil of doing business. Today, FreeFlow and Andlor are proving that by pairing reverse logistics software, which tracks and monitors returns with a fully hosted auction solution, with strategic business services, which dispositions the returned inventory, manufacturers can instead create a new revenue stream. Returned products that once sat idle or were recycled ...
Some notes on realizing positive ROI from system implementation
2007-12-09 17:07:03
We all know that only a fraction of companies implementing enterprise software can achieve a positive ROI from their system implementation projects (SAP, Oracle, or any other). A good area for discussion is how companies can realize the stated benefits from ERP or E-Biz adoption. These are my thoughts: 1) Unlike many experts, I am not pessimistic about SAP projects or big system implementations however I think Increased Employee Productivity occurs when there is both a sufficient number of users and sufficient frequency of use to gain significant productivity based gains from the solution. 2) If we think about a module like SRM, the success in implementation of such module depends on us as well as the suppliers. If the suppliers are not mature enough in terms of using web-based transactions, the adoption of let`s say mySAP SRM won`t be a big success. 3) I read in a report from Nucleus Research that one of the reasons companies can`t achieve positive ROI from their implementations i ...
