Miss China Is Miss World 2007 — The Meaning, The Worldwide Repercussions, The Deep Analysis
2007-12-11 01:16:34
As everyone probably knows by now, Miss China was crowned Miss World 2007 in Sanya, China (h/t to Fili). Though I did not watch any of the event and have not a single complaint about Zhang Zilin (see below), I have to think her victory is somehow connected to the event being held in China. No matter, her crowning has no deep meaning and will have no worldwide repercussions. Not only that, for once, I am speechless. Source: China Law Blog ...
Planes, Trains And Automobiles: The China Way
2007-12-11 01:16:30
James Fallows, Atlantic Magazine writer extraordinaire, has a great post, entitled,”‘The’ way vs ‘a’ way (Japan v China dept),” comparing Japan’s way of doing things versus China’s (h/t to Experience Not Logic). Fallows uses fueling a plane as a great visual example, but to fully understand it, you must go to his blog check it out. Fallows summarizes the differences between China methods and Japan methods as follows: With usual caveats against sweeping generalization, what this made me think was: Japan is all about the way of doing things. Practice, ritual, perfectionism, as much fanatical attention to the process as to the result. China is all about finding a way to do things. Improvisation, little interest in rules, putting up with whatever is necessary to attain the result. (Yeah yeah yeah, there are exceptions: perfectionist operations in China, loosey-goosey ones in Japan. Still.) At the moment, I am feeling positive toward both ap ...
Dell to reduce emissions on supplier side
2007-12-11 01:15:35
I wrote a post couple of months ago on the plans of Dell Computer to become “The greenest technology company on earth” (See Sustainability in the supply chain: Dell needs to move quickly) Over there I wrote that Dell has lots of challenges to achieve this goal given the amount of investments which other companies such as HP and IBM have already done. But it seems that Dell really wants to take the lead in this respect because recently, Dell became the first IT company to sign up to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) plan to report on supply chain carbon emissions, according to IT World. The Carbon Disclosure Project is a not-for-profit organization founded to obtain full carbon footprint disclosure by Times 500 companies on behalf of investors and with a desire to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The CDP's Supply Chain Leadership Collaboration (SCLC) project has produced a worldwide standard for supply chain businesses to report their emissions. By signing u ...

Develop a map of your supply chain for higher transparency
2007-12-11 01:15:30
It may be unbelievable but many logistics manager, especially in supply chains with multi-country operations don't have a clear view of how is the exact flow of material, info and money. Developing a map of your supply chain might seem really a basic thing but even if it is done at high-level, can make SC decision making much more effective. Look for example, at this map here. It's about a Fair Trade Coffee supply chain: It clearly shows the suppliers, their offerings and the flow of material and money. You can also click on different parts of it and go more into detail. See article. Source: Supplychainer ...

Are your China sales managers really managing – or just doing their old jobs at a higher level.
2007-12-09 17:24:55
Sales management in China has two aspects: operational and leadership. Good sales-managers are usually the best sellers that the company can lay its hands on. But they also usually have to lead a team that is probably quite management-intensive and is prone to personality and relationship issues. Maybe it’s a […] Source: China Business & Management Solutions: ChinaSolved ...

Strategy (and Policy Alignment) Pays Off
2007-12-09 17:16:42
State visits from the France and the US often result in big trade deals – especially for planes…and especially when a company makes a good strategic play in relation to support for Chinese policy. In the latest case the big contract is for Airbus (the obvious loser is Boeing ), and the policy is China’s aim to make passenger jets by 2020. The good news for France (ahead of the EU-China Summit) is reported in the Economic Times reports: “Airbus said it signed contracts Monday to sell 160 passenger jets worth around US$14.8 billion (euro10 billion) to China in a deal that stands to push the Eureopean plane maker past archrival Boeing in total commercial aircraft orders this year. Planes ordered include 110 of the company’s A320 jets and 50 of the slightly larger A330 planes, Airbus officials said in Beijing, where they were accompanying French President Nicolas Sarkozy on his first state visit to the Asian trading giant. Airbus and Chinese partners this summer sign ...
China Business Bloggers Love…China Law Blog
2007-12-09 17:16:23
Lawyers often get a bad press. Sometimes it can be pretty obvious why…But good lawyers with interesting things to say, who contribute wise words to difficult debates, should be congratulated (just occasionally, and without too much fuss). And so to China Law Blog (CLB), one of the really great China business blogs. CLB’s Dan Harris and Steve Dickinson need no introduction to many readers of this blog, as their words of wisdom often appear in these pages. They have also been kind enough to link here from time to time. They have even referred some business in this direction. So, in their hour of need – and as the votes get counted for the ABA Journal Blawg 100 Awards - they can count of the support of China Business Blog – and a slew of others (including ImageThief and The Peking Duck) to put the word out and get the vote up. CLB deserves your vote. And, if they win, more people in America and elsewhere will start tuning into a message from China that is told by people who know h ...

Chinese ODI Hits Mexico & Afghanistan (& Rio Tinto)
2007-12-09 17:14:52
The development of Chinese overseas direct investment (ODI) has become a regular feature of the business pages . Everyone knows about the failed investment by CNOOC in Unocal, the purchase of IBM PCs by Lenovo, and the recent headline deals in BG, Blackstone, Barclays, Bear Stearns and Standard Bank (the latter seeming to prove that China’s investments are not simply being picked, alphabetically, out of the business pages!). China is now clearly looking further afield (Mexico & Afghanistan) – and deeper (more mining): • Mexico: LA Times reports that “Mexico’s largest specialty retailer [Grupo Elektra], said this week that it was partnering with [FAW] one of China’s Big Three automakers to build a [US$150 million] plant in central Mexico with capacity to produce 100,000 vehicles a year.” • Afghanistan: It is all about copper – and specifically US$2.8 billion of investment relating to the Aynak copper field in Logar Province “the world’s largest ...

Inflation Nation
2007-12-09 17:14:20
It seems a long time ago that China’s inflation got out of control in 1994, and had to be stamped out by then Premier Zhu Rongji. While it is not that bad this time, it is clear that inflationary pressures have become a big issue for the economy. The Chicago Tribune reports: “The highest inflation in more than a decade is frustrating citizens and unnerving political leaders who are mindful that rising prices have been a volatile factor throughout Chinese history. China’s inflation is also a growing international concern. For years, cheap Chinese imports have helped control inflation in the U.S., but if Chinese exports get more expensive here, they could, in turn, drive up inflation abroad. …China’s consumer prices soared by 6.5 percent in October, compared with a year earlier, matching a rise in August that was the highest in 11 years. Housing is also on the rise, with home prices growing by a new monthly record of 9.5 percent in October despite government efforts to ...
Trade Surplus Hits US$27 Billion in October
2007-12-09 17:13:19
Record trade figures no longer surprise. They are right up their with the stock market and property prices! The latest figures show China’s trade surplus reached a record US$27 billion in October. Malaysia Star reports: “China’s trade surplus rose to a record US$27.05bil in October, adding fuel to US complaints yuan is undervalued as Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson prepares for an economic summit in Beijing next month. The gap increased 13.5% from a year earlier, the customs bureau said on its website yesterday. The yuan’s appreciation versus the dollar accelerated last week to the fastest since China ditched a fixed exchange rate in July 2005. The 0.6% gain took the appreciation since the end of the dollar peg to 11.6%. Larger increases ease the inflow of cash that threatens to stoke inflation already close to a decade’s high. … Imports jumped to US$80.7bil, while exports rose 22.3% to US$107.7bil. Global oil and commodity prices contributed to the ...
Employ Anyone in China? Employ a Lawyer!
2007-12-09 17:13:03
The Labour Law has been bubbling away as an issue for some time, but now that it is almost upon us, calls to action are starting to be heard. One of the louder (and always well-informed) voices can be found on China Law Blog: China’s New Labor Law — It’s A Huge Deal. Huge I Tell You. “Everything is going to change on January 1, 2008, for employers in China. Well almost everything. That is the day China’s new labor law goes into effect and if you have employees in China (especially if you “unofficially” have employees in China), you absolutely must take various steps to get into compliance AND to avoid being sued. And you better start taking those steps now…” See the full article here. It also contains a link to an English language version of the new Labour Law. Source: China Business Blog ...
Stampeding to Regulation
2007-12-09 17:12:29
While foreign retailers are making inroads in China, harsh lessons are being learnt when things go wrong and consumers react in unexpected ways. Xinhua reports on a tragic accident - and the rush to regulate: “China’s Ministry of Commerce issued an urgent circular on Monday banning time-limited sales promotions in shops following a deadly stampede at a Carrefour outlet. Three people died and 31 were injured in a stampede triggered by a sales promotion at a Carrefour outlet on Nov. 10 in the country’s southwestern Chongqing Municipality. The three-day promotion at a hypermarket in the city’s Shapingba District was launched to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the French retail giant’s entry into the city. The shop offered an 11.5 yuan (1.5 U.S. dollars) savings from the original price of 51.4 yuan for a five-liter bottle of edible oil. When it opened its doors for business throngs of people swarmed in and a mass stampede began. “ Swarming con ...
