Charlotte? A Miserable City?
2008-01-31 11:13:00
Forbes reported that Charlotte ranked 9th in their Most Miserable Cities in the U.S.! Even to them it was a surprise. The biggest surprise on our list is Charlotte, N.C., which is ranked ninth. Charlotte has undergone tremendous economic growth the past decade, while the population has soared 32%. But the current picture isn't as bright. Employment growth has not kept up with population growth, meaning unemployment rates are up more than 50% compared with 10 years ago. Charlotte scored in the bottom half of all six categories we examined. It scored the worst on violent crime, ranking 140th.Detroit was number one. So what went into factoring this? Things like unemployment rates, taxes, commute times, weather, pollution and crime. Those factors may be true - we do have quite a bit of traffic - but what do you think? Do we deserve number 9 on the misery scale?Read America's Most Miserable Cities from Forbes.com- Rosie Reilman ...

It does you or your future employers no good if you submit an unfinished, unpolished resume. Here's a couple of posts containing tips on writing a well put together resume to submit for employers.Subject Line and Naming Your DocumentFor our CD, I always ask people submitting your resume to put your industry in the subject line. 2008-01-08 10:29:00
I'm excited to announce that we've finally gotten our first Charlotte job fair of 2008 scheduled for February 19th. Because February is just around the corner, I thought now is a good time as any to offer some resources to attending a job fair and getting the most out of this event. First of all let me tell you about our job fairs. Usually we get anywhere from 30-50 employers to sign up for the event. They'll show up about 2 hours before the start time to set up their displays and information. Job seekers will be allowed to enter at 10:00 am. You'll be able to speak with recruiters from these different companies who are looking to hire in a variety of industries in Charlotte. This is a great opportunity for those of you who aren't quite sure exactly what you're looking for or for an upcoming graduate who isn't sure what they want to do after graduation. This way you can just talk with the recruiters to get an idea of what to expect. But we publicize all of our employers pr ...

We're Growing North Carolina! Looking Back on Population 2007
2007-12-27 15:30:00
If you're like me, you're a transplant here in the Carolinas. North Carolina this year saw a 2.2% increase in population with South Carolina right behind with a 1.8% increase. Some other fun facts from the Census include:Approximately 191,048 people arrived here over the past year. 128,849 babies born were born in 2007 in North Carolina. 74,229 residents died in the past year. If no one moved to North Carolina last year, NC population still would have increased by 54,620.However, you and I know this isn't the case. There were 136,428 who moved here in the past year. Most relocated from other states adding up to 111,963 people. The remainder were international immigrants. The Western states of Nevada and Arizona are top in this particular population growth census. North Carolina and South Carolina are in the top 9 and 10 slots. So if you're new to Charlotte or any other city in North Carolina, welcome! We've got some great job opportunities waiting for you! Also please feel free ...
Personal Branding for the Job Search
2007-12-19 15:21:00
What is Personal Branding or a Personal Brand? From Wikipedia:Personal branding is the process whereby people and their careers are marketed as brands. It has been noted that while previous self-help management techniques were about self-improvement, the personal branding concept suggests instead that success comes from self-packaging.So it's a way you portray yourself to others. Obviously this is important to your job search because how a company or recruiter sees you can determine whether or not you get the job. If you are perceived as a well-rounded, knowledgeable and qualified candidate, then you'll more than likely get the job you're applying for. With the rise of social networking and increased time people spend online, your presence online is really your personal brand and it encompasses everything down to your email address.Statistically 47% of people Google themselves to see what the search results yield.About 60 percent of Internet users said they aren't worried about the ...
Connect with Healthcare Professionals, Search Jobs, Get Information
2007-12-17 12:34:00
There has been a lot of talk recently about the shortage of nurses and how it's expected to continually grow. Here's some statistical information for you:Last year hospitals needed 118,000 nurses to fill vacant spots. US Bureau of Labor Statistics expects by 2014, hospitals will need 1.2 million new and replacement nurses. PLUS by that time 703,000 new positions will be created (and need to be filled). There are less faculty to teach nursing students and less students who want to study nursing. Those who are currently RNs seem to be experience job burnout because of the shortage. They're dissatisfied with the diminishing amount of time they can spend with their patients and the quality care that their facilities are providing.1 out of 3 hospital nurses under the age of 30 plan to leave their current job in the next year. These are some surprising statistics, though with any job if you have a lack of people the work you'd like to provide can't be done. We're really excited about our ...
Manufacturing Jobs Still Got Game, But For How Long?
2007-12-11 09:14:00
The Carolinas 100 is a list of 100 top companies that are headquartered either in North or South Carolina and are listed on the stock market. It's extremely interesting that 5 of the top 10 companies that made The Carolinas 100 list are in manufacturing. While factories seem to take a beating, the skilled labor positions still seem to be going strong. We've even noticed a huge increase in skilled trades jobs in all of our cities. A report back in June talks about how manufacturing employment in North Carolina has changed:The most successful manufacturers in the state have moved low-skill jobs offshore or... replaced them with machines to save on labor. In 1990, one in four people employed in North Carolina worked in manufacturing. Today, it's about one in eight. But workers now are more likely to have advanced degrees and can command higher salaries. So while the manufacturing scene is changing it's not quite dead and gone. In fact, it's just different. The Employment Security Comis ...

Why You Should Put Time into Writing a Job Description
2007-11-19 13:11:00
Part of what I do is help write job descriptions. I see a lot of jobs from a lot of companies that write very good job descriptions. However, a lot of times I'll see ads like this one:Now HiringCustomer Service PositionsCall Today! With the dozens of other staffing agencies and companies looking to fill the same position out there and what makes you stand out? This as an advertisement says nothing about if this is going to pay me enough, what the work environment or hours are like, what kind of benefits do they offer? Part of my job is to help optimize postings like this one. However, when I do it most the time there will only be very general information about what the job entails or maybe a little bit about the company overview. I can only do so much, but as a recruiter, you know more about the environment, the benefits and reasons why a jobseeker should want to work for your company. So here are some ideas to help you write better job descriptions for your postings on Employme ...

It helps the recruiter remember you and they really appreciate it because very few job seekers actually do this. 4. Get a mentor to help with your networking and learn more about your industry. 5. Work hard on Tuesdays. It's the most productive day of the week so make sure you take advantage of its’ natural productiveness in the work week.6.
