Industrial Blog: Maintenance Workers, Employees vs. Contractors
2007-10-24 09:15:00
Last Friday I attended ConvergeSouth, an unconference about social networking and blogging. I met a lot of people in the Greensboro area who were avid bloggers or trying to learn how to get started. One individual, Johnny Welch I happened to meet walking back to my car after Friday and found out he wrote an industrial blog. It's got some great information for those of you in maintenance jobs or in an industrial setting. I'm not mechanically inclined but I added his blog to the list of local blogs for your reference.I particularly wanted to point out this post where he talks about the differences between company and contracted workers. Some of the benefits of being a company employed worker. It might give some good insight to those of you out there trying to decide to stay with (or move to) a company or to set out doing contracted work.In terms of the job hunt, unconferences are a great way to network and talk to people who might be hiring! Generally, they're free or very low cost, y ...
Happy Boss' Day! Tell Us About Your Boss!
2007-10-16 08:26:00
When I started working here at EmploymentGuide.com, my co-workers took me out one Friday after work. We sat around the bar at Chili's and over drinks and chips and salsa, we started talking about work and they proceeded to tell me that our General Manager, Lyle Stone, would be the best boss I'd ever work for. So far that's proven to be true. This is pretty hard to find considering what a lot of people have to deal with sometimes. Not only does he really abide by our "open door policy", meaning that you really feel like you can go in and sit down with him when you have a problem, but he asks about our lives, and he knows how to motivate our team into being one of the top sales offices in the country. So on this National Boss Day, we'll be celebrating his hard work and dedication to his staff. So thank you Lyle! Not only do we have Lyle but we also have our Office Manager, Marsha Eversole. Marsha is the general care-taker of the office. While she fields calls when we're caught in tr ...

Yahoo! News: Factory orders fall in August
2007-10-04 09:55:00
I was browsing through my RSS feeds this morning and saw the headline Jobless claims jump by 16,000. It's no secret that the economy is down right now and the article talks about how factory orders have decreased causing an increase in lay offs in the manufacturing and factory industry. So I thought I'd highlight a lot of the staffing agencies and employers that are currently running with us who have factory, warehouse and manufacturing jobs available in and around Charlotte. Hopefully this helps those of you out there who might be on the hunt for a job after a lay off or another reason for change in employment status.Remember: You can always click on the company name to see other job postings that these companies are offering.AdeccoAccurate StaffingAramarkExcel StaffingLabor FindersSeek CareersDebbie's Staffing RSI Holding CorpVenturi StaffingSelect StaffingVolt Workforce Solutions-Rosie Reilman ...

Picker Packer Picked a Packers' Pack of Pickled Peppers…
2007-09-28 10:09:00
Part of my job I help to write job descriptions so that you, the job seekers will be able to find the jobs when you search in Google or any other search engine, or when you search our own website. Anyways, in one of my hunts to find more information about Pickers and Packers, I found this rather humorous blog post about an office admin for a warehouse company and their dilemma over the confusion of the jobs of the order pickers and the packers in the warehouse. It turned into quite the tongue twister! I thought those of you who work as a picker or a packer, or who work in a warehouse even would find it kind of funny. Enjoy!Today at work an employee who works as an order picker said to me,“You give all the orders to the packers to pick, and if the packers pick all the orders then there is nothing left for the pickers to pick. ”Huh?“Can you say that again please?” I nicely replied“We are pickers, not packers. We pick. If you give orders to the packers to pick then we have ...

Career Fair to Match Older Workers and Jobs
2007-09-11 13:56:00
A Mature Worker Career Fair will take place Tuesday, September 18th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel, 3115 Scott Futrell Dr, Charlotte NC 28208 (I-85 @ Billy Graham Pkwy). The AARP Foundation has collaborated with The Charlotte Employment Guide to match prospective job seekers with jobs. Mature-worker friendly companies will be available to talk with applicants at the job fair. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the share of the labor force ageed 55 and older, currently at 17 percent, is rising rapidly and by 2020 it is projected to be nearly 24 percent. The graying of the labor force can be attributed to many factors including longer life expectancy, the enactment of age discrimination laws and the significant increases in healthcare cost, necessitating more income later in life.Keeping those workers employed also makes good business sense. A report prepared for AARP by Towers Perrin, The Business Case for Workers Age 50+, found that older workers are more moti ...
New on Endangered Species List: The Lunch Hour
2007-09-05 10:34:00
How many of you take lunch? One article on MSNBC talks about the extinction of the lunch break."We’re all too busy these days to take a leisurely lunch and we also want to get out of work at a reasonable hour so we can have some quality time with our families and friends. If you work through lunch, the thought goes, you can get out of the office before the witching hour."Sometimes I guess you can feel like that. I know I have, when there's a lot going on and I feel like I don't have enough time to do it all, I will eat at my desk while I work. I've read this before and I think it is pretty true with myself that:"… giving up your lunch break could actually diminish your productivity, causing you to end up putting in more hours in the long run, not to mention what it does for your health and well being."Just do a search on productivity and taking breaks and you'll find a plethora of articles and blog posts about how taking short breaks helps increase productivity. It seems contra ...
News Release: The New American Workforce: Older Workers
2007-08-29 07:42:00
The Employment Guide and AARP Foundation bring together older workers and potential employers during “Employ the Older Workers Job Fair Series”NORFOLK, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Labor Day is an opportune time to reflect upon the American workforce. Since the inception of Labor Day 125 years ago, the complexion of the workforce we honor has changed dramatically. Increasingly these laborers are older Americans. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the share of the labor force aged 55 and older, currently at 17 percent, is rising rapidly and, by 2020, it is projected to be nearly 24 percent. The graying of the labor force can be attributed to many factors including longer life expectancy, the enactment of age discrimination laws, and significant increases in healthcare costs, necessitating more income later in life.Older workers staying in the labor force longer is good news for employers. A mass exodus of Baby Boomers, currently between the ages of 43 and 61, from the labor fo ...

Mecklenburg County Unemployment Rises to 5%
2007-08-27 15:22:00
"The unemployment rate in Mecklenburg County rose to 5 percent in July from 4.8 percent in June, according to the N.C. Employment Security Commission."It's a tough market out there, both for job seekers and recruiters. Unemployment is pretty low and companies seem to be turning to older workers to satisfy their empty positions."In less than 10 years, the number of jobs that need to be filled will increase by up to 5 million jobs, said Jim Seith, national program director for low-income programs and work in AARP Foundation. Older workers can “add value with the ability to mentor and coach” younger workers, Lawrence said, but so far, he hasn’t seen companies using them in that way."Those of you out there looking for a job, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for our upcoming job fair on September 18th at the Sheraton. If you're a recruiter, you'll not want to miss participating in this event. It's going to be very unique in that we're trying to be older worker friendly. We're ...
