No Such Thing as Simple Favors: Know Who You Owe!
2007-12-18 15:00:00
Business and society glides along if for no other reason then professionals have come to a common understanding that we must “scratch each other backs” if there is going to be any semblance of normalcy. This is one of the major reasons that the upper class has the opportunity to rub elbows, engage in business deals and hang out a private clubs. These groups of elitists have learned that their individual strength lies in their abilities to help each other maintain and increase their wealth. People often do favors for each other and help each other because it is in their own self-interest to do so. They figure that if they do a favor for someone that favor will be returned at a latter date (Meskill, 2007). A problem results when favors are given and not returned among professionals. A type of resentment sets in that merits punishment. The term altruism is used to describe the concept of “tit for tat” in the professional and elitist world (Trivers, 1971). Altruism is a term that b ...

Why Corporations Give Money: What’s the Numbers?
2007-12-16 10:28:00
Corporate giving has always been the mainstay of many organizations who count on that money in order to keep their lights on that the services still flowing. With the economy on the verge of a recession people may wonder what the corporate giving outlook is going to be this year. With less money filling corporate coffers one might logically assume that corporate giving would be down but this is not the case.In 2006 Corporations gave around 4.6 billion dollars, which is an increase of 2.7% after inflation from 2005 to 2006. 2007 is supposed to supposed to be an even more lucrative year for corporate giving. A poll conducted indicated that 57 % of corporate respondents believe they will give more this year ranging to around an increase of 10%.Many organizations rely on that money. Type of organizations that need corporate giving range from the Arts to Social Work and everything in between. The question then arises as to why corporations give money. You would think that many of these corp ...

How the Head Hunter Process Works
2007-12-15 13:34:00
Headhunters have become major contributors to the executive field. The reason why they have become major contributors is because they serve the anonymous functions of both the applicant and the company attempting to recruit new candidates. In many of these cases neither the executive nor the company want it known that they are seeking new arrangements. Headhunters rarely give out the name of their client until the interview stage has begun. The reason why they do this is because they do not want to risk losing their income to a company or an executive that wants to cut them out of the deal. When it comes to the candidate the headhunter wants to ensure that they are part of the process from start to finish. It isn’t difficult to get yourself hooked up with a headhunter. You only need to conduct your job search like you normally do and you will soon find that some of the positions are offered by third party administrators. Once you have sent in your application in many cases they hold ...

Why Commission Jobs Aren’t the Best
2007-12-14 15:58:00
With a potential recession in the economy and the potential loss of jobs more and more people will be considering commission-based jobs. Many of these jobs come in the form of taxi driver, sales, professional service jobs and more. These jobs can be great news for people who want to further their income but not so great news for those who need money today and the comfort of a regular paycheck. Let us say that you lost your job and have to figure out how to make a living. With little money in your pocket you decide to drive a taxicab until you can get back up on your feet. The problem is that when you go to the taxicab company you have to pay $50.00 to get the car, put down a $20 gas deposit, and clean out the car before you even get started. You are already out $70.00 and you haven’t even seen your first client. In many cases you can make some money but it takes longer then one would expect and in most cases you have to shell out money to even get started. Sometimes it can take up to ...

Poor International Customer Service at its Best
2007-12-14 09:11:00
How would you feel if you ordered a service and come to find out that the service is precisely not what you ordered but you had already paid for it in advance and can’t get your money back. I would be that you would feel a little angry. These problems are becoming larger, more common and more complex to deal with simply because of the Internet, international companies and lack of legal response. Let me give you a scenario. Since I run an online advertising business and require lots of content I decided to put on a new site an article directory. Knowing that I needed extra capabilities to do this I called the company before hand. The sales person said that it would be no problem to have tech support upload my software to my site. Do you know what happened after I bought the service? You probably guessed that tech support kept repeating the slogan “we do not upload third party applications”. The more I explained to them my situation the more they became belligerent and tried to up s ...

Measure Twice and Cut Once: Short-Sighted Decision Makers
2007-12-13 13:00:00
As managers and business owners we often want to get things done right away but aren’t often aware of the impact of these decisions until they are implemented. The foresight isn’t there and the impact is still unknown. In small departments the off-the-cuff decision making may work but when it comes to large organizations problems could be brewing under the surface. The problem with not having an overall plan and an end goal is those executives and other decisions makers are unsure of where they are supposed to be going. When these decision makers solve problems they do so in the most convenient and quick method they can but don’t give consideration to long term objectives and its impact on the rest of the organization. In most cases executives are only employed by the organization for 3 to 5 years. Therefore their decision making is likewise short-sighted to make themselves look good. There is almost no incentive to go ahead and attempt to fix long term problems or worry about t ...

Did you know that Japan’s economy was suffering?
2007-12-12 22:00:00
It might seem interesting to know that Japan’s economy is struggling and they are beginning to adopt the American style of doing business. They have gone through an entire decade of economic stagnation and are only now seeing some of the fruits of their labor. Most American’s have assumed that Japan was leading the pack but this is not the case anymore. Government debt in Japan is around 180%, which means hat they have been running at a high debt ratio that may affect their future growth. This debt will need to be arrested and the only way to effectively do this is to raise overall taxes. Without taxes the debt will grow with the need to increase growth. Japan also has an aging work population much like the United States except their aging problems are much worse then ours. This aging population is affecting their productivity of the average citizen. For example, they had a productivity of 88% of the U.S. around 1993 and that has dropped to around 84% today. That doesn’t change ...

Property Investments: Do you know what to look for?
2007-12-12 12:28:00
Investing in property is important in order to increase wealth and promote future financial viability. The problem is that many pieces of property are declining in value because of the credit crunch. In places like Michigan one in ten homeowners actually file for bankruptcy and therefore banks are cautious about giving out loans and have tightened credit. Therefore, investing in property needs to be planed and thought out well. Currently mortgage applications are on the rise (Marketwatch, 2007). One of the reasons why the mortgage applications rose 2.5% is because rates are expected to increase and people want to lock themselves into something that is lower. However, that doesn’t mean that all of these people will be able to get the lower rate or be approved for refinancing. Therefore, housing is likely to stay stagnant as little new financing for new construction is available. Likewise, if construction isn’t on the rise then existing homes become a better deal. Some people who had ...

China Shakes Europe and the U.S.
2007-12-11 19:28:00
Napoleon said 200 years ago, “Let China sleep, for when she wakes the world will shake.” The truth is that the world is shaking under the potential of this huge country and its growing business might. The big dragon spits out manufactured products like a dragon spits out fire. Both the U.S. and the E.U. are getting concerned. The E.U.’s trade deficit is around 130 billion while the U.S. has around 180 billion dollars with China. That means China’s manufacturing power keeps growing each and every year and both American and European consumers are eating it up. Both the U.S. and the E.U. are scratching their head and wondering how they keep their Yuan so low. It has come to the conclusion of many economists that China is using a protectionist model. This means that they are artificially deflating the value of their currency so that prices and products stay cheaper. When the currency is low then the products shipped to both the E.U. and the U.S. are cheap. China isn’t as concerne ...

Looking Your Best for Promotion
2007-12-10 21:05:00
Business is a funny thing. In many cases it comes down between how you look and how you act. Assuming that everything is the same between you and the next person you might find that your attractiveness or lack of attractiveness can really affect your promotion opportunities. Few executives want to encourage a slob and therefore it is necessary to look your best. It may not be fair but attractive people seem to win out in just about everything from income to spouses. As study found that attractive people earned 5% more than average people. Even worse an unattractive person had a 9% penalty in wages while an obese person earned 17% less in wages then an average person (Beauty’s in the, 2005). It is amazing that the total difference in wages could be as much as 23% more then someone who is obese. If you knew the difference between these two extremes wouldn’t you consider how good you look at work? Of course you would because having a slovenly look means that you aren’t making as muc ...

Burgers, Fries and Ignorant Politics: Does Democracy Need an Overhaul?
2007-12-10 12:21:00
America has become a confusing place for many people who are trying to decipher through the mess of politics that is inherent in a huge country that touts democracy. The Critical Review’s (No. 1 Vol. 19) article Ignorance as a Starting Point: From Modest Epistemology to Realistic Political Theory states that a new elitist political paternalism may be necessary to counter the general ignorance of the population. In other words, brighter minds need to make decisions for people. The concept of political elite makes some sense but in reality this is already the case. We have in the U.S. a pseudo-democracy in the sense that all of the candidates are known but few, except the elite, know what the candidates stand for. Democracy, in its early American terms, meant that politics was done on a local basis. People knew who the runners were, shook their hands, asked them questions, etc… This is one of the reasons why many politicians still travel the country. At one time in history it meant s ...
