Big Truck Fatal crashes down

Three of the primary measures of large truck safety fell to record lows in 2006, according to figures released by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Newly released Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) vehicle mileage figures, used to determine annual crash rates, showed that the large truck-involvement rate in fatal crashes, the fatality rate and the fatal crash rate for large trucks each declined to its lowest level since the U.S. Department of Transportation began tracking large truck safety records in 1975. source

You've been hearing about the Tesla Roadster,the all-electric sports car, for nearly two years. On Friday, the firstcommercial version of the car came out of its shipping crate. Thestreet-legal car was bought by Tesla Chairman Elon Musk, who showed itoff to employees and reporters at the company headquarters in SanCarlos, Calif. When it comes to security, human threats scoremuch higher than those posed by technology. So says a new survey byconsulting firm Deloitte of more than 100 technology, media andtelecommunications companies worldwide. Seventy-five per cent of companies listed humanerror as the leading cause of security failures such as breakdowns andsystems outages. Forty-eight per cent also cited operations andtechnology lapses as key causes of security failures. Problemsresulting from third parties such as contractors and business partners,meanwhile, received 28 per cent of the votes as a root cause ofsecurity failures. source

Computer Forensics Show 2008 -- Peter Tippett thinks it'stime for security professionals to wake up and stop wasting theirenergy. In a presentation here yesterday, Tippett -- who is vicepresident of risk intelligence for Verizon Business, chief scientist atICSA Labs, and the inventor of the program that became Norton Antivirus-- said that about one third of today's security practices are based onoutmoded or outdated concepts that don't apply to today's computingenvironments. "A large part of what we [security pros] do for ourcompanies is based on a sort of flat-earth thinking," Tippett said. "Weneed to start looking at the earth as round." For example, today's security industry focuses way too muchtime on vulnerability research, testing, and patching, Tippettsuggested. "Only 3 percent of the vulnerabilities that are discoveredare ever exploited," he said. "Yet there is huge amount of attentiongiven to vulnerability disclosure, patch management, and so forth."read more here
