4 health behaviors can add 14 extra years of life
2008-01-08 07:38:00
People who adopt four healthy behaviours – not smoking; takingexercise; moderate alcohol intake; and eating five servings of fruitand vegetables a day – live on average an additional fourteenyears of life compared with people who adopt none of these behaviours, according to a study published in the open access journal PLoS Medicine. Rather than focusing on how an individual factor is related to health, the study calculates the combined impact of these four simply-definedforms of behaviour. The results suggest that several small changes inlifestyle could have a marked impact on the health of populations. There is overwhelming evidence showing that lifestyles such as smoking, diet and physical activity influence health and longevity but there islittle information about their combined impact. Furthermore the hugeamount of information provided by these studies and the varyingdefinitions of a health behaviour that these studies use can often makethem confusing for public health professiona ...

Garmin's POI Loader v2.3.2
2008-01-04 19:19:00
The Garmin POI Loader allows auser to download to certain Garmin GPS units (see list here) pointsof interest or user specific locations. You might say that these arenothing more than waypoints, in the newer Garmin auto navigators. Garminhas made significantimprovements to its free POI Loadersince its initial release, making it easier for people to create their own POIfiles. Version 2.2, was released in January 2006, and if you do not havethe newer version, we recommend you download it here. The Garmin versionof POI's involves .csv files and now .gpx, which are different from the .ov2format used with the TomTom. The POI Loader is now compatible with Garmin's MapSource program included inGarmin's mapping software. Most units which are compatible do not haveMapSource as part of the package however. But you can also use EasyGPS or G7ToWin, shareware type programs, which will work as well. There are now a few websites which offer pre-produced POI's. Some are fee sites, others ...

Songbird Music Power
2008-01-03 22:24:00
I know I post about this too much:)Songbird is a desktop music player I've been using lately instead of iTunes andI've really been enjoying it. Based at core on Mozilla technology, thisweek the company kicked off a 6 week campaign to build the 40 most-requested Firefox extensions for Songbird. This big burst of functionality could put Songbird over the edge as amusic-lover's dream-come-true, though it's pretty close already. The company is backed by Sequoia Capital, the funders of Google andYouTube, and though the product has had "developer releases" availablefor almost 2 years - it's not really offered as a public product yet.No matter, you can and should try it out now. Alex Iskold wrote hereabout the product's desktop/web blend in February. source ...

Surf the web with Calculator
2008-01-03 21:26:00
??? you might askEver find yourself sitting in front of a computer that's been lockeddown by an overzealous IT administrator who won't let you install anysoftware or even open Internet Explorer or Firefox? If that PC isrunning Windows XP, there's a good chance you can still visit Download Squad (or other sites if that sort of thing appeals to you). All you have to do is launch a Windows application like Calculator, andthen click the Help button. Under Help, click "Help Topics," which willbring up a help window. Next, all you have to do is right click on thetitle bar and select "Jump To URL." Now you can type in any web addressyou like, but make sure to include "http://" at the beginning.Basically what you're looking at is Internet Explorer 6 inside a helpwindow, but this version of the program isn't quite as smart as IE6. Itwon't automatically add the http:// for you. And of course, there's nobookmarking feature.source ...
