Emerging Hurricane's Strength
2007-09-12 22:40:00
A new study supported by NASA and the U.S. Office of Naval Researchtakes forecasters one step further to improving their ability topredict just how powerful an oncoming storm may become by usinghighly-sensitive sensors located thousands of miles from the storm todetect lightning outbreaks within a hurricane's most dangerous area. Researchers can now investigate with greater accuracy how the rate oflightning strikes produced within a hurricane's eyewall is tied to thechanging strength of that hurricane. A hurricane's eyewall is the innerheat-driven region of the storm that surrounds the "eye" where the mostintense rainfall and most powerful winds occur. By monitoring theintensity of lightning near a hurricane's eye, scientists will be ableto improve their forecasts of when a storm will unleash its harshestconditions. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/09/070906162003.htmPowered by ScribeFire. ...

Diesel Exhaust May Increase Risk In Patients With Heart Disease
2007-09-12 21:48:00
Air pollution could be putting patients with heart disease at risk by affecting blood vessels and clotting, researchers warn.A study by the University of Edinburgh and Umeå Universitymeasured the effects of diesel exhaust on heart and blood vesselfunction in men who have previously experienced a heart attack. Theresearch, funded by the British Heart Foundation and published in theNew England Journal of Medicine, found that inhalation of dieselexhaust caused changes in the heart's electrical activity, suggestingthat air pollution reduces the amount of oxygen available to the heartduring exercise. story here Powered by ScribeFire. ...

dynamite truck explosion
2007-09-11 21:43:00
More than 30 people have been killed and 140 people injured when a truck carrying dynamite exploded in Mexico shortly after being involved in a road traffic accident near Sacramento, Coahuila. The lorry collided with another vehicle on a busy Northern Mexicohighway, and the wreckage quickly drew a large crowd of onlookers.Shortly after the spectators arrived, the vehicles burst into flames, causing the dynamite to explode, engulfing nearby cars. The explosives had orriginally been intended for delivery in Coquimatlan, Colima, for use in coal mining. The truck had just left an Orica explosives facility where the dynamite had been manufactured. The explosion left a crater 10 feet by 40 feet, and was powerful enoughto blast out the windows of a passenger bus a quarter of a mile away. There are conflicting reports of death and injury counts, with the Associated Press giving the toll as 34 dead and 150 injured, and BBC News Online as 37 dead and 'dozens' injured.http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/ ...

fuel out of water
2007-09-11 20:22:00
Interesting ehhhh:)DAVIS, Calif.--Here's a novel business plan. Prairie Village, Kansas-based Nowa Technologyhas come up with a wastewater treatment plant that sucks out materialsfrom wastewater and some of these removed products can be consumed as adiesel additive. It depends on what's in your wastewater, but Nowa CEORichard Nelson says you find the fuel there quite a bit. You can mix it 50-50 with diesel and get about the same amount ofenergy as pure diesel, according to Nelson. (I ran into him in thehallway at the GoingGreen conference taking place here.) This isdifferent than what Israel's BioPetrol is trying to accomplish. Thatcompany is applying the coal-to-petrol process on human sewage. The unit costs $7 million and pays for itself in a few years, he added. full story HEREPowered by ScribeFire. ...

A Weed’s Potential Power
2007-09-11 14:12:00
“I thought it was a plant for old ladies to make soap,” But now that a plant called jatropha is being hailed by scientists andpolicy makers as a potentially ideal source of biofuel, a plant thatcan grow in marginal soil or beside food crops, that does not require alot of fertilizer and yields many times as much biofuel per acreplanted as corn and many other potential biofuels. By planting a row ofjatropha for every seven rows of regular crops, Mr. Banani could doublehis income on the field in the first year and lose none of his usualyield from his field.story herePowered by ScribeFire. ...

Diesel Exhaust Kills Throat Cells
2007-09-11 13:53:00
Researchers at Deakin University have found that diesel exhaust is farmore damaging to our health than exhaust from biodiesel, theplant-based fuel. Associate Professor Leigh Ackland, Associate Head of Deakin's School ofLife and Environmental Sciences, led a team of researchers who comparedthe effects of diesel exhaust and biodiesel exhaust on human airwaycells. They found that diesel exhaust damaged and killed the cells, while biodiesel exhaust had little effect."The fumes from burning fuels, including diesel, contributes topollution and can cause heart disease, bronchitis and asthma. Effortsare underway to replace petrol and diesel with cleaner biofuels, suchas biodiesel, but there is considerable resistance to this. "This study provides clear evidence that diesel exhaust is more harmful to our health than biodiesel exhaust."more info herePowered by ScribeFire. ...

Females Promiscuous For The Sake.........
2007-09-09 21:52:00
Well now this splains alot:) Female animals that mate with multiple partners may be doing so toensure the optimum health of their grandchildren, according toresearchers at the universities of Leeds and Exeter. Despite mating being a risky business for females – not leastwith the threat of injury, sexually transmitted diseases andvulnerability to predators - polyandry (females taking multiple mates)is widespread in the animal kingdom. Dr Stephen Cornell (Leeds) and Dr Tom Tregenza (Exeter) have shown thatpolyandry may have evolved as a survival technique because it providesgenetic benefits for species that either accidentally inbreed, or mayhave no other choice in certain circumstances. Virtual Reality
2007-09-09 21:48:00
Is the navigation system too complex? Does it distract thedriver’s attention from the traffic? To test electronicassistants, their developers have to build numerous prototypes –an expensive and time-consuming business. Tests in a virtual world makeprototypes unnecessary. Car manufacturers and suppliers will be the chief beneficiaries ofPersonal Immersion® in future. Developed by the FraunhoferInstitute for Industrial Engineering IAO in Stuttgart, this virtualreality and stereoscopic interactive simulation system makes itpossible to display tailored virtual environments for purposes such asthe development of driver assistance systems. Whatever traffic situation is to be illustrated, and whatever demandsthe driver may make on the vehicle electronics, such as retrievingup-to-date traffic jam warnings – there are no limits to theimagination when testing these systems. morePowered by ScribeFire. ...
