Toll Road Prohibition Act of 2007
2007-10-15 20:37:00
Congressmen Leonard Boswell (D-IO) and Lee Terry (R-NE) have justintroduced a fearsome sounding "Toll Road Prohibition Act of 2007."Watch it guys, you're about to be outlawed. Prohibited. No toll roadsallowed from 2007 onward. Better start closing down the roads andgiving everyone an early retirement. Well not quite.Legislation in the US Congress rarely lives up to its billing and thispiece of legislation is typical. Indeed the better rule when judgingany piece of legislation nowadays is to assume it probably means theopposite of what its title suggests. http://www.tollroadsnews.com/node/3184 ...
Don't put so much blame on trucking industry
2007-10-15 20:34:00
Gripes by local columnist Paul Carpenter about the pampered truckingindustry with respect to fuel tax and toll charges can be rectified.Approximating 5 miles per gallon for trucks versus 30 miles per gallonfor cars, and assuming his 9,600 to 1 ratio for highway damage, simplyadjust truck fuel taxes to 1,600 times car taxes, per gallon, effectiveimmediately (6 to 1 miles per gallon ratio). That way, virtually all truckers will be off the highways uponconsumption of their present fuel load because they cannot afford tofuel up. If there are any remaining trucking companies, they will buyup those that are bankrupt and, considering that it would take about120 gallons of diesel for a truck to go from here to Pittsburgh andback, the fuel tax bill alone will be about $105,534. Then, a current $1,200 trip cost, of which about $360 is fuel, willescalate to $106,394, the adjusted difference being driver salary, maintenance, and amortization of the equipment. As far as the tolls go,just invoice the ...
GAO Faults FMCSA on Trucking Fines
2007-10-15 20:18:00
Trucking regulators do not always use the maximum fines on truckingcompanies found with serious safety violations, according to theGovernment Accountability Office, Bloomberg reported. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is required to set“maximum fines” against truckers with a second majorviolation, instead of waiting for a third as it does now, according tothe GAO report, Bloomberg said. FMCSA “does not assess maximum fines against all of the seriousviolators that we believe the law requires,” GAO wrote in thereport, which was requested by House Transportation Committee ChairmanJames Oberstar (D-Minn.). “I am deeply troubled by the GAO findings regarding FMCSA’spractice of assessing fines to motor carriers that repeatedly violatecritical motor-carrier safety statutes,” Oberstar wrote in aletter to FMCSA Administrator John Hill, Bloomberg reported. source ...
11-Hour Limits Will Remain
2007-10-15 20:14:00
Trucking Industry Group President Believes Federal Regulators Will Keep 11-Hour Driving Limit. Big trucking companies believe federal regulators will maintainexisting limits on drivers' hours, rather than endorsing a court orderthat would result in one less hour behind the wheel each day. Consumer advocates sued to reduce the amount of time truckers can staybehind the wheel continuously because they say the industry is puttingthe public at risk. The American Trucking Associations counters thatsafety actually improved last year under the existing rule. more here ...
Auslogics Disk Defrag 1.4.10.248
2007-10-15 18:51:00
Disk fragmentation leads to system slowdowns, PC crashes, slow startup and shutdown and sometimes to system failures. Auslogics Disk Defrag® is designed for fast optimization of today's modern hard disks. Get the maximum performance out of your expensive hardware investments. And it's absolutely FREE.Hard disks are by far the slowest component in your computer. CPU and memory work much faster than hard disks because they do not have moving parts. Therefore fragmented disks often become a bottleneck of the system performance.Besides causing slowdowns, fragmentation makes the hard drive disk heads move frequently when reading files which leads to freeze-ups and system crashes. It is important to keep your disks de ...
Rough Road Ahead
2007-10-14 22:18:00
When freight manager Jeffrey Tucker heard the state planned to turnInterstate 80 into a toll road, he wondered, "What next?"More change is battering the trucking industry than at any other timein the 46-year history of the Tucker Co., a Cherry Hill logistics firmfounded by his grandfather. The proposals - including adding tolls to I-80 and turning thePennsylvania Turnpike over to private operators - would dramaticallyalter the two main cross-state routes, truckers and transportationexecutives say. Meanwhile, the industry faces troubles on severalfronts:Another change in the hours drivers can legally work, arising fromefforts to reduce the 5,000 fatalities a year from truck-relatedaccidents, is being battled out in the courts, and the outcome couldforce higher costs and complex changes.Trucking companies wrestle with driver turnover rates of more than 100percent per year and wonder if they will be able to meet thecargo-growth demands in coming decades. Tightening environmental rules are ...

Pitfalls of un-encrypted wireless connections
2007-10-13 18:38:00
We’ve all heard about the pitfalls of unencrypted wireless connections, but yet thousands of people still obliviously surf the web and check emails on vulnerable Wi-Fi networks and public hotspots. A couple of months ago we wrote about the ‘Point and Click’ Gmail hacking techniques demonstrated at the Blackhat and Defcon computer security conventions, but for many people simply reading about a hack isn’t enough. In this article and accompanying video, we’ll teach you have to perform the same attack and you’ll probably be very surprised at how easy it can be done.http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/34324/108/ ...
All technology can be traced back to a stick
2007-10-13 18:04:00
Well heres food for thought:))))Sci-fi writer Douglas Adams liked to trace technology back to a stick. For example, a computer is an advanced typewriter, which is an advancedpen, which is an advanced stick in the dirt. All right, can we do thatwith an iPod?An iPod's ancestry goes like so: An iPod is one step up from theCD player, which is a step past the record player or phonograph. Beforethat sound reproduction came from sheet music, which was a way ofmarking down sounds from instruments. The most primitive instrument isthe drum, and the real part of the drum was hitting it, so the ancestorof the iPod was a stick being beaten atonally on various rocks. (Thesound would return in the form of Nickelback.)But what about the Nintendo Wii?Well it's a descendant of the N64, Super Nintendo, and Nintendo gamingsystem; before consoles, Nintendo made arcade games, which were justfancy pinball games, which evolved from a game called the Bagatelle, atable game adapted from billiards, which came f ...

The All-Seeing Automobile
2007-10-12 20:28:00
Nissan is debuting a new technology in Japan this month. It's calledthe Around View Monitor, and it creates a composite image of the scenearound your car. Four cameras, one each at the front corners, one at the back, andanother near the driver's side rear wheel, capture the scene as shownin the images on the left. Inside, the driver sees the total picture, atop-down view. This technology could be a dream for parallel parking, and a bonus for parents who don't want to run over Little Susie'sfavorite toy as they back out of the driveway. The tech is slated tocome to the US in December in the new Infinity EX35.http://popsci.typepad.com/popsci/2007/10/the-all-seeing-.html ...
