Exxon Mobil Corp. believes it has found an answer to a problem that hasbedeviled the auto industry in recent years: using rechargeablelithium-ion batteries, like those found in cell phones and laptops, topower cars and trucks. This weekend, at a conference in Anaheim, Calif., Exxon Mobil willunveil a super-thin plastic sheeting the company says can improve thepower, safety and reliability of lithium-ion batteries for use inautomobiles. A first review of Secret Service files has found that only half ofidentity-theft cases involved technological devices, such as computers,scanners and digital cameras, and only 10 percent were done exclusivelythrough the Internet. Some low-tech tactics in the other cases included rerouting mail bysending change of address requests to institutions handling credit cardand bank accounts, swiping items right from residents' mailboxes and"Dumpster diving" — going through trash for information used toproduce counterfeit documents and to open credit accounts. A fifth of the time, identity thieves stole personal data at theirworkplace. Of those, 60 percent were employed in places such as stores,car dealerships, gas stations, casinos, restaurants, hotels, hospitalsand doctors' offices.
