Guardian Unlimited: Alvin Ailey's dancers need a new direction
Ailey is taking a lot of bad press in the UK right now. Here the Guardian is saying that the company is marginalizing themselves by getting stuck in the racial/cultural past.
Here is the article in two lines:
"In theory, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is a mixed-race, multicultural dance company. In practice, much of its core repertory trades in a style of black and Latin stereotypes that are old-fashioned and restrictive."
I see their point. Yes, the company will need to broaden it's cultural view if it wants to remain relevant to a larger audience.
But I don't think that Ailey is creating work designed to be relevant to London dance-goers. While Ailey's "black and Latin stereotypes" are ancient history in the UK, they may not be to Ailey's core audience.
I don't think there is much of a future for the company in limiting their work like it is now, but you might also consider that you're just not the audien ...

“[alvin ailey american dance theater], once so bravely revolutionary, is in danger of becoming a moribund institution.” - Judith Mackrell, The Guardian
via quodlibet
But isn't that the case with all of our older choreographers? Taylor, Graham and Ailey were all revolutionaries in their time, but no one can be a revolutionary for 50+ years... and it's pretty hard after you're dead. It's a natural progression; their revolution has succeeded, they shouldn't be expected to be revolutionary anymore. I think it's stating the obvious at this point. ...

Oasis 4 review
2007-09-08 17:47:04
Against the backdrop of the Brooklyn Bridge, Silver-Brown Dance Company’s Oasis 4 dances to the sounds of New Orleans’s jazz. In an effort to find common ground between the locations of two national tragedies, SBDC creates a site-specific dance at Brooklyn Bridge Park. 4 dancers along with about 20 community members take part in this event surrounding the dates of the two city altering events.
In her choreography Artistic Director Eva Silverstein makes good use of the park’s unique features; using the steps of the levy to conceal dancer’s bodies or as cliffs for them to bound from. The dance flowed well with the jazz music provided (via recording) by musicians from the Crescent City. The work featured some playful chase sequences as well as some swing-style lifts and partnering. While the choreography was strong, it was not really “fearless”. It matched the upbeat and varied style of music that New Orleans is famous for.
Although the installation was meant to “link the ...

DancenOw | NYC – Base camp review
2007-09-06 06:26:00
Robin Staff sure knows how to pick them. As the festival’s co-founder (along with Tamara Greenfield) and artistic director, Staff has chosen a diverse and talented line-up that is full of surprises. In its 13th season, the festival features the “10th Anniversary Project” honoring 5 chorographers who have grown with the festival since 1997 including David Parker, Brian Brooks and in last evening’s performance, Nicholas Leichter.Leichter opened the evening, performing his own Animal, fresh out of 1997. Viewing this evocative work was like hearing a thousand one-second stories as each movement conveyed the depth of a human story. As the montage of characters grew, Leichter seemed surprised at the movements of his own body, as though it were speaking of its own volition. His idiosyncratic movements created a richness that filled his stories with life.Wow Mom, Wow was a playful romp punctuated by exquisite partnering among the trio in Faye Driscoll’s piece. In the opening section, ...

“At this early stage, Morphoses is still a pickup company with no permanent members. It is, however, one hell of a pickup company.” - Brian Seibert in the Village Voice on Christopher Wheeldon's new company. I think he has the right idea; use his connections and personal friends to build the company name before beginning the expensive and slow process of building a company. For now he can create work for some of the biggest names in ballet without having to support them full time or rob the major companies that he still wants to make dances for. ...
