Patron Mail: Use and misuse
2007-07-25 09:16:10
Let me first say that the mass move to Patron Mail is a good thing. I don’t think anyone wants to go back to the dark days when companies were manually editing mailing lists and either sending plain text mailings or horribly garbled rich text. But what annoys me is the misuse of this mailing software/site.
We all surf a lot of websites. Especially those of us who are dredging the web for content. You get a feel for page design and layout. Important things are near the top separated from other content, it’s nice when information is broken into chuncks and when you see what you want, you click on it. We call this design ‘keep it simple, stupid.’ (no offense to users)
Why does this breakdown when you reading a Patron mailing? Readers are still viewing an HTML page whether in a mail viewer or web browser, why does it still look like a news letter and less like a website?
Case in point: Why doesn’t DTW provide more links in their mailing? You open the message and you see a pic ...

Photos from Pilobolus' new works

Photos from Pilobolus' new worksHonestly, B'zyrk was one of the weakest pieces in recent years. Cheap New Vaudeville set to movie soundtracks. We'll see what Tonya writes this week about it later this week. ...

Doug Fox wonders if his quest is in vain
2007-07-24 18:08:04
Doug Fox wonders if his quest is in vainDon't throw in the towel Doug, dance companies are just slow movers and late adopters. The best line: "Just because there are all of these wonderful digital tools available does not mean that their mere use will magically solve all the challenges of the dance world." Couldn't agree more. But coming tomorrow: the use and misuse of Patron Mail. Enough is enough. ...

NY Times covers the STREB nastiness...
2007-07-23 20:18:06
NY Times covers the STREB nastiness...It was 'public' before when Dance Insider covered it, but now that the Times is on the the story it's really "public." Here are my thoughts on this:
1. I'm not sure why this is anybody's business but Terry and Elizabeth's. Elizabeth has a for-profit company and decides that Terry doesn't work there anymore. She is totally within her rights. She may have been a jerk about it, but c'est la vi. Is this really a question of Wrongful Dismissal or hurt feelings?
2. deeAnn is injured in the line of duty. No harm, no foul. Dancers get injured while dancing all the time. Sure, STREB's dances are more dangerous, but she wasn't hurt while doing something the company should have foreseen as dangerous. She was climbing up a ramp. STREB pays for her surgery since it's work related. Fine. I'm assuming that the company does everything that it can to make performances safe. They could not have foreseen the fall from the ramp. They are at fault for noth ...

“I... asked (Pilobolus) not to perform my works, and to disclose to the dance world their new reconfigured Pilobolus....But I still am contesting their ownership and lay claim to my works."” - Fired Pilobolus director Alison Chase It's a little bit of old news, but it's still going on. Even in this summer's ADF program the company wrote about itself "It (the company) has not, however, forsaken its original impetus and remains a deeply committed collaborative effort with three artistic directors and seven dancers contributing to one of the most popular and varied repertoires in the field." (ADF Program) ...

Speaking of the dead...
2007-07-19 10:56:01
It's about to be Dead Month in NYC. You know that 40 day period at the end of summer when there are no dance shows? Between Pilobolus closing at the Joyce (Aug. 11) and about mid September? For instance Cedar Lake's next show isn't until Dec. 10. Danspace is closed until Sep. 5.We assume that Dead Month happens for several reasons:1. All the cool companies are out at Jacob's Pillow.2. Everyone who goes to see dance gets out of the City.3. Dancers contracts begin/end during this time so it takes a while to create new work or teach old rep. Not that it's anyone's fault, but what do we write about when there are no shows? If you hear of anything, be sure to drop us a line at critics@danciti.com ...

LABORATORY IN ARTS MANAGEMENT at DTW
2007-07-17 10:16:56
LABORATORY IN ARTS MANAGEMENT at DTWI wonder if anyone from DTW is planning on taking this class that they are offering. It's aimed at creating more people who can give "administrative and managerial support to performing artists." Like how to use a website I assume. Wouldn't it be nice if DTW had this information on their site for me to link to instead of just this PDF? ...
