Bad Boys of Dance
2007-08-03 07:51:50
Bad Boys of DanceThese guys have been getting a lot of coverage lately, mainly because Rasta Thomas is the artistic director. This is the first honest review I've seen: If you're expecting ballet, you'll be disappointed. If you like humor in dance, you'll be happy. ...

Contact Improv group on YouTube

Contact Improv group on YouTube Not the most sophisticated of video productions, but interesting none the less. I had no idea that You Tube had groups (what rock have I been hiding under?). Not every video will fascinate me, but I have found a few interesting ideas. ...

Great Dance is Expanding
2007-08-02 16:47:38
Great Dance is ExpandingThis is actually a really good idea for Greatdance. A kind of one-stop-shop for dance blogging. Maybe a better version of The Winger. While we see the benefits, danciti isn't going that direction. ...

2007-08-02 16:42:36
WHO: Philadelphia Dance Company (Philadanco)
Camille A. Brown & Dancers
WHEN: Friday, August 3rd, 8:00 PM
WHERE: Rumsey Playfield, Central Park SummerStage. Enter the park at 69th Street and Fifth Avenue on the east side or at 72nd Street and Central Park West on the west side.
WHAT: An alumna of the Alvin Ailey School and a former member of Ronald K. Brown’s Evidence, Camille A. Brown is one of New York’s most exciting young choreographers. The company that bares her name is only a year old, but already has distinguished itself. Reviewing the company’s debut, The New York Times observed: “Ms. Brown presents the dancing body as a vehicle for overt religious celebration…[mixing] modern dance techniques with West African dance elements.”
I'll be there. Free shows? You can't lose. Unless it's really bad. Then we can just leave. ...

Ballet brings mixed results - Times Union - Albany NY
2007-08-02 09:15:17
Ballet brings mixed results - Times Union - Albany NYFrom the article: The Saratoga Performing Arts Center released preliminary attendance figures for last month's residency by the New York City Ballet.
The news was somewhat mixed, with the total attendance of 45,004 reflecting a growth of approximately 5 percent over last summer. That number, however, was reached by a season that included three more performances than 2006 -- meaning that the average per-performance attendance of 2,143 reflected a decrease of approximately 10 percent.
This is isn't shocking, is it? The Saratoga Performing Arts Center isn't the only performing arts venue with low attendance. It is worth looking into the background and figuring out why attendance is down. How to compete in today's saturated marketplace. Not a new discussion, but one we will continue to grapple with until we are satisfied. Right? ...

Doug interviews Stephen Greco
2007-07-27 12:08:12
Doug interviews Stephen GrecoWorth watching. The highlights:
1. Stephen is going to keep DTW going in the same direction while trying to expand the audience base. Wow. Shocking.
2. DTW is getting a new website that is less 'brochure-like.' I'd settle for clear of broken links, I say "it's about time."
3. Stephen is going to push DTW to meet it's potential. He says that there is a lot of young talent in positions of authority who will shake things up. Good news.
I think this is a great thing. Greco might be the kick in the pants that DTW has needed. ...

Do Jewish choreographers love chairs more than the rest?
2007-07-26 10:44:58
Do Jewish choreographers love chairs more than the rest?Apollinaire Scherr goes in depth to give you the answer... I'll grant you that we see a lot of chairs in new work these days, but I don't think there is a higher percentage in works by Jewish artists. I think we're just seen a lot of notable work by Jewish artists lately. ...
