"The 'boys-will-be-boys' self consciousness threaded through the presentation wore thin almost..."
2007-08-08 12:56:55
“The 'boys-will-be-boys' self consciousness threaded through the presentation wore thin almost immediately and proved that boys who don't have notable artistic direction or originality will be bad in a literal rather than street-speak sense in no time at all.” - Robert Greskovic, on Rasta Thomas and the Bad boys of Dance at Jacob's Pillow in the Wall Street Journal. You know it's a big deal if WSJ is covering it... Basically he says they are immature. Artistically and otherwise. I can see that. ...

Using Dance Blogs to Reach Beyond Traditional Dance Audiences
2007-08-06 07:57:00
Using Dance Blogs to Reach Beyond Traditional Dance AudiencesI'm not sure that I buy this. I don't think blogs reach beyond the super dedicated dance devotee. You read blogs about things that you already have a strong interest in rather than stumbling across a blog and finding a new interest in dance. Blogs aren't a very good entry point because they are written for such a niche audience. It's hard to get interested in a blog that is about the subtleties of dance if you're not already highly interested in dance. ...

2007-08-06 07:18:22
“Danielle Martinelli, a choreographer and former dancer, agreed: “We are all, men and women, contributing to the system. When I walk into that rehearsal space, and I am talking about ‘the men’ and ‘the girls,’ that’s such a perfect example of how deeply ingrained it is. Here I am, a female choreographer, very aware and confident of my abilities, but I’m still carrying on this legacy of difference in treatment.”” - New York TimesAn interesting article regarding the roles of women and men in ballet.  ...
Camille A Brown and Dancers Review
2007-08-05 17:05:35
Camille A Brown, a veteran of Urban Bush Women and Ailey II, made her solo chorographic début Friday night at SummerStage in Central Park. Dancers from PHILADANCO, Ailey II and Ronald K. Brown dance companies performed her ensemble and solo works in the hot summer evening. Camille combines the expressive, soulful movement vocabulary of Ailey, the honest poetry of Tania Isaacs and the raw power of Urban Bush women to create a blended but unique artistic voice. Yeah, that sums it up. Camile’s movement is most like typical Ailey style movement: unison and cannoned, grand classic American modern dance. She mixes in some beautifully honest poetry by Dana Gourrier in Choices, a solo for Hope Boykin from Ailey. She is undoubtedly going to be an important voice in choreography in the coming years as she is able to walk the fine line of producing work in the style of older great choreographers while maintaining her own creative voice. If you like Ailey and Unban Bush Women, you’ll like ...
