“Site-specific refers to a work of art designed specifically for a particular location and that has an interrelationship with the location. If removed from the location it would lose all or a substantial part of its meaning. Site-specific is often used of installation works, as in site-specific installation, and Land art is site-specific almost by definition.
” - tate
As good a definition as I've ever seen. "Site Specific" and "Installation" are still perhaps the vaguest terms in dance, but I accept this definition.

Accounting for Customs

Accounting for CustomsTonya Plank covers the Reggie Wilson/Andreya Ouamba installation. Good write-up. As usual a little snap-happy with the photos, but they're pretty good. I would love to see it myself, but I'd never make it there and back during my lunch break. ...

Great Performances Nureyev: The Russian Years on PBS

Great Performances Nureyev: The Russian Years on PBS At last, this performance documentary reveals why he felt compelled to defect in 1961 -- his daring quest for personal and artistic freedom -- as well as his painful homecoming many years later under the hostile eye of the KGB.
Looks good. I have always wondered about the pre-American years.... ...

ABOVE THE BELTABOVE THE BELT presents aerial artists from the U.S., Canada and Europe performing on trapeze, hoops, fabric, and rope. New work, signature pieces, works-in-progress, traditional
circus, and experimental aerial dance are all showcased in this unique evening with an ever-changing line-up of artists.
I would go, but it's one night only at The Zipper Factory and they don't invite media for one night events. ...

ADF kept looking back through the 2007 season
2007-08-22 12:38:52
ADF kept looking back through the 2007 seasonByron Woods trashes ADF. He does that a lot anyway, but this time I think he is on the right track. He points out that ADF as no real national significance since all they do is present "the Old Guard." They try to bring in some 'new cutting edge' Argentines or Russians or whatever, but it's a sham. ADF is like the Good Ol' Boys Club of dance. The season is like a reunion of Charles Reinhart's friends. It's the same people and companies year after year more because they are personal friend's of "Charlie" than because they have anything worth performing.
Way to go Byron, criticism justly placed. I hope Charles and Jodee listen to you. ...

RETTOCAMME: “work with no progress” in review
2007-08-18 21:30:18
Photos of the event
In this dance/paint collaboration RETTOCAMME fuses live painting by Emma Cotter with dance improvisation by Marcia Brooks, Aaron Graham, Elisa LaBelle and Kimberly Lantz.
I know it sounds like a publicity stunt to get people to come out to some gallery during the slow part of the summer, and it may be, but it’s worth it. The premise is simple. Three dancers improv in the front window and take turns improving with a painter using the window as a canvas. The result is amazing.
The dancers appear in plain white smocks and brilliant neon spiky haired wigs. At first they perform either a carefully crafted improvisation or a set dance in unison in the midsection of the gallery. Then they take turns rotating into the front window to improv with Emma while the other two continue a subtler dance on the floor. There is a fourth dancer on the second floor of the gallery who is blocked from view for most people, also without being able to improv with the painter, her pe ...

Introducing danciti photos
You can access our gallery from that little link at the top left that says 'photos'. Yes, now we are creating albums for shows and installations that we review. You can see our album from RETTOCAMME.
Just FYI, Google's Picasa is way better than Yahoo!'s Flickr. For one thing Picasa allows unlimited uploads per month and has more than a gig of storage space. It has all the same features like maps and sharing it's just less restricted and you can even upload straight from iPhoto. ...
