““Now our focus is back on our mandate: to notate dances both old and new, and to build an informed audience who can see dances that might never be performed if notated scores did not exist,” Ms. Allison said. “Laban’s original vision was to give dance a written form so that it can be reproduced. Without that, he felt, dance would never be a respected art form.”” - Dance Notation Bureau - New York TimesThe Dance Notation Bureau is back on track.  An interesting business ... to be sure. ...

Choreographing Space Review
2007-08-26 14:02:58
Photos from this performance The Choreographing Space installation opened last night at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Swing Space. This installation “exploring the intersection of architecture, dance and moving image” is a collaboration between architect/sculptors Eva Perez de Vega Steele and Ian Gordon and several local choreographers. Each performance includes a video projected in the space followed by a dance performance in the installation. The installation itself is a wonder. In many of the promotional photos, the small plastic balls appear to be hanging on lines from the ceiling. In reality they are suspended in an incomprehensible web of lines complete with tension springs and anchored with hundreds of eyehooks. Each ball is hanging by two lines that cross in the center and then cross through each adjacent ball. The result is that by moving one line the whole web reacts. The opening night featured a short film by Maia Sorensen and a duet performance by Maia So ...

In The Company of Beautiful People: Quorum Ballet At the Downtown Dance Festival
2007-08-24 07:57:32
In The Company of Beautiful People: Quorum Ballet At the Downtown Dance FestivalTonya writes about Quorum Ballet from Portugal. Viewing these photos reminds me how convoluted the term 'ballet' has become. Once the most concrete dance description, it now covers everything from ABT to Cedar Lake to Quorum Ballet. I feel like we throw it into company names to make them more appealing; like it reassures audiences. 'Don't worry, it won't be too weird, 'ballet' was in the title.' I'm not complaining because I'm a huge fan of contemporary ballet, but I'm thinking that the term has become less descriptive. ...

Job opening - Development Associate Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater - Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater - Development Associate "Development Associate to work in the areas of individual giving, government support and special projects." It's just impossible to keep development associates. Everyone told me to become a development associate at an organization that I wanted to work for and give it 6 months. Then someone in the organization would leave and they would move the development associate up and get a new one. 6 months. That looks about right given all the job postings. ...
