Troika Ranch: Loop Diver
2007-09-05 23:30:22
Troika Ranch: Loop DiverLoop Diver will be a live, evening-length multimedia work for six performers and interactive media built completely from interwoven loops of movement, text, music and interactive visuals. September 5-9, 12-16, and 19-23 @ 7:30pm Tickets: $20 3LD Art & Technology Center 80 Greenwich St. at Rector I'm not going because the thought of driving loops (even if they are meant as "metaphor for all of life’s repetitions") gives me a headache. Kind of like the Troika Ranch website. Update: Watch this video interview Troika Ranch about Loop Diver via quodlibet ...
Battle for BAM Cultural District Space
2007-09-05 23:24:50
Battle for BAM Cultural District Space Did you hear about the new arts and music venue opening in Fort Greene? Danspace was supposed to move to this place soon, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen now. Todd Triplett and co invested more than $1M in refitting an an old liquor store at Fulton Street and Ashland Place to be a new arts space. Now he's being told that it's under eminent domain. ...

“No, there’s something about dancers, the way they know how to hold shape and use focus, and even project personality, that you don’t get from athletes or gymnasts.” - Fashion and Dance in the NY Times All those years at the barre could pay off even if you don't end up dancing. You could be a fashion model. “A reader will realize, consciously or not, that they’re looking at the physical elite. There is something robust and intelligent in the body that comes through in these ads.” ...

Changing Places: Invisible Wings at Jacob's Pillow

Changing Places: Invisible Wings at Jacob's PillowDeborah Jowitt says some re-stagings don't change for the better. She feels like Hiagood's reworking of the piece left out the more powerful parts. Then she just gives a play-by-play of the work. Not bad if you didn't see it. ...
Thinking about a text messaging campaign? Think again...

Thinking about a text messaging campaign? Think again...Gene Carr points out that text messages are a poor substitute for e-mail and thinks that it will be a short lived fade. I think we've always know that text messages are just a poor man's e-mail for phones. As e-mail on phones becomes cheaper, we'll all get it. In the mean time, unless you're planning a rave, stick with e-mail marketing. ...
DTW launches new site
2007-09-04 14:23:18
DTW launches new site It's about time, but worth the wait. WAY better than their old site and totally clean. Four menu items on the homepage. Beautiful. I'm not really a fan of all the videos on the homepage though. I hope it's temporary as DTW announces it's season. I know that moving images are the best way to sell dance, but it's annoying and busy to have six going at once. Maybe they will go to just one video of an upcoming performance soon. That would be a great move. ...

“...but his comment touches on a concern among many in the dance world: that too often the Joyce makes safe artistic choices.” - New York Times via CounterCritic I have to defend the Joyce by saying that the Joyce fills it's role as the 'mid-sized' dance theatre for NYC. Both in terms of size and artistic temperament somewhere between Lincoln Center and DTW. We need that middle ground that the Joyce provides. ...

Dead Month comes to an end
2007-09-02 19:56:35
Dead Month comes to an end Yes, we coined the phase dead month. Apparently, if you Google dead month our post is the 8th item. I think its catching on. At any rate, DancenOw | NYC is bringing it to a close. Opening the festival on Tuesday is Four Up, a mixed bill headed by David Parker and the Bang Group. While the Bang Group doesnt really motivate me, Wednesdays bill with Battleworks, Misnomer Dance Theater and Wallie Wolfgruber does. Frankly its one of the strongest lineups in the festivals 13-year history. ...
Choreographingspace week 2 mini review
2007-09-02 19:51:55
Kim Jones had her turn to choreograph in the space last night. While sticking with the Graham vocabulary of last week, Jones enlivened the movement, using a full spectrum of pace. Joness choreography really brought out the differing dynamics of the installation; the slow rolling lines of the floor as well as the ridged vibrating cables. The dancers seemed to be less afraid of interacting with the cables of the installation this week as Kim and other dancers intertwined themselves in them making the airspace ripple with their movement. A great addition to the installation. Open for two more weeks. Photos from this performance ...

2007-09-01 11:49:28
On Monday, September 24, Mindy Aloff speaks with Macaulay about his education and background as a critic of dance, music and theater and about his tastes and criteria. A question-and-answer period will follow. FREE and open to the public Monday, Sept. 24, 7:30PM Held Lecture Hall 304 Barnard Hall Barnard College You know CounterCritic needs to be there. It would be interesting to hear what McCauley has to say about his taste in dance since we all have to hear about it day after day. I'm going to try to make it to the Q/A. ...
