It snowed.. sort of..
2008-01-06 09:05:57
Well it snowed, not really what I'd call any great amount; more like a dusting than a snow 'fall', but you make the best of what you get. So here are some photos take around 8:00AM as the day was beginning to show some 'light' signs.

Winter Frost [photographs]
2007-12-30 12:49:23
Winter lasted about a week this year; well actually three days if I recall correctly, where temperature were low enough for me to have worn extra layer indoors. But that's by the by. I managed to grab the shot below of the frosts that we did have; I've changed the format a little bit so that you can use it as a background image without the flat light grey that was being used on the previous photos, that way you can save it and use it with your background desktop colour showing in the 'blank' bits.
I don't know if you've ever looked closely at frost but it's quite fascinating; the crystalline structure is composed of layers that grow on top of each other ending up in these semi-cuboid structures which give it that 'crispy' appearance; I imagine a spherical structure would make it appear 'softer'. I'll keep an eye out for more frosty mornings.

"...attend a seminar in Manchester..." (art spam/scam)
2007-11-27 22:45:40
I've been pondering recently where art scammers get our email address from for their spam. Not only that but today's news entry also makes me wonder if they all use the same resource for the the content of their spam because I just got a couple of artists sending in the same letter from different people supposedly wanting to buy work from them. Obviously the wording is slightly different in each case but barely enough for it to be noticeable when viewed side by side with other letters; what generally does change are the contact details.
Some notable problems;
As far as I can tell there is no such thing as a "swift account"; there is a swift service however that is;
"a telegraphic transfer service that can be arranged using CitiPhone or at one of our branches, and allows you to send money to bank accounts almost anywhere in the world." (CityBank quote)
Keep the above in mind as reading through the letter below the chap offers to use two payment methods to pay for the goods, a 'bank ...

"I have a job for you" - ken_steven01@hotmail.com
2007-11-17 19:45:46
I've been a bit lax for a while with news on the site, I've been preoccupied with quite a bit of other work which hasn't let much time to fix a couple of problems on the site or add new news items; it's catchup time.
So without further ado we have a new item that was sent through by a fellow visiting artist that's a slightly different take on the whole "we have job vacancies and positions to fill - earn loads of cash from home processing forms" spam mails that have been coming through as of late, this one aimed at artists (it's copied verbatim by the way so grammar, spelling mistakes etc. aren't my dyslexic artsy self writing them, despite a copy/paste!);

Got another letter from the well known domain hoodwinkers Domain Regestry of America (the DROA of the title) today, this time they're after my web design domain cpdt.com. I did a bit more research into these chaps and if you were ever in any doubt then you may find these links of interest concerning the matter;

Wild Flowers & Alyssa Carter
2007-08-29 10:55:21
I went out along the York-Selby cycle path the other day and something occurred to me as I was looking around for photographs to take (I did take a lot but they weren't 'art' photos and needed for something else that I do). It suddenly occurred to me that a painting is much more apt to 'describe' a landscape than a photograph. There's something about the way a (good) painting 'paraphrases' a scene so that it contains it's essential elements (it's 'essence'), the feelings from ones insides it brings to the surface, trying to describe the warmth of the sun and so on. It's actually quite easy to do that with paint. A landscape photograph on the other hand is a different matter, it's actually incredibly hard to do the same thing because a photograph captures all, including the warts; with painting you can leave those out.
Digital cameras in particular seem to have peculiarities that you have to work around; contrast seems to be the main one I've found so far. Having used an ...
