Michael Wutz at Volitant Gallery (Austin)
2007-08-27 12:12:00
Michael Wutz, Smoked Heads of Slain Friends, 2007, charcoal on paper, 88 x 122 cmI'm posting about this show again because I want you all to go and see it. Volitant Gallery presents the first U.S. solo show of young Berlin artist Michael Wutz, curated by Till Richter. It's a really great show including etchings, charcoal and graphite drawings, two oil paintings, a wall drawing, and a video.Wutz's images, taken from news media and other print sources, refer to death, decapitation, genocide, visions of the world's end, Haitian voodoo, and other timely subject matter; but his treatment of the images is gentle - they don't scream horror; they draw you in for closer inspection by their beauty and their dark mystery. Wutz's technical mastery shines and creates a feeling of warmth and intimacy in spite of the heavy content of the images. His loving treatment of the severed heads of children, for example, is a succinct concrete metaphor for the heart's struggle to find love and joy in t ...

process-color painting, and the color-homogenizing effect of glazing
2007-08-25 17:14:00
Sam Sanford, slab1, 2007, oil on canvas, 18" x 24"One of the things that makes photographs look real is that they are able to capture the fine-grained complexity observed in nature. Large-scale elements are made up of small-scale elements, which are made up of tiny-scale elements. At each scale, any element you can identify in the picture appears to be made up of smaller, heterogeneous elements, down to the scale of one pixel. I stress the heterogeneity of the picture-elements because this is precisely the painter's problem - things are different colors and shapes, and each thing is made up of smaller things that are all different colors and shapes, down to an infinitesimal scale, so the painter has to draw a line somewhere. Unless you are working on a very large scale, your limit of detail will not be as fine as the information in the photograph; you will have to blur or smooth over the heterogeneity at scales beyond your limit - you will have to represent as single color-shapes thin ...

Saatchi Showdown online art competition
2007-08-13 18:35:00
Andrea Eitel, relationship, 2007, oil on canvas, 90 x 120cm(many more images follow the text below)The Saatchi Gallery website is unique among art gallery websites. It contains an overwhelming amount of resources, including images and texts for every artist exhibiting at the gallery; an open registry where all artists can upload images and text; guides to galleries and exhibitions all over the world; guides to museums, art dealers, calls for entry, grants, art fairs, and art schools; and a lot more stuff I haven't had time to look at.The website has recently introduced an online competition open to all artists called Showdown. Here's how it works: In each of twelve rounds, several thousand artworks are presented at random to site visitors, who are asked to rate the artwork from one to ten. Each time a visitor rates an artwork, another randomly-selected artwork appears. Thumbnails also scroll across the top of the screen at random, and visitors can click on a thumbnail to view and rat ...

Michael Wutz at Volitant (Austin)

Silver Lining flat lining: Michael WutzVolitant GalleryAugust 10 - September 22, 2007opening reception Friday, August 10, 6:00 - 9:00 PMartist's lecture Sunday, August 26, 2:00 PMFrom the press release:Volitant Gallery presents “Silver Lining flat lining” by Michael Wutz, curated by independent curator and art historian Till Richter.“Silver Lining flat lining” is the biggest body of works to date by German artist Michael Wutz. The complex includes three large scale paintings, one large scale etching, a series of four triptychs of graphite on paper and two series of almost one hundred Polaroid format etchings and hand-painted etchings. Finally, he combines these media into a video installation.Wutz’s powerful images show a quasi-apocalyptic vision of our world close to flat lining. As fantastic as the images might seem, they possess an eerie familiarity, probably because they are drawn from news media or books like the blind-folded man about to be executed or the headhunter t ...
