Urban Cancer

“Urban Cancer”, a project by Mexican artist Gilberto Esparza, connects up multiple street lamps to one pole, in order to examine the technological imperialism of modern cities. This video has really nice details of just how he got all those lights up there.

Ket is free! $5,000 fine

As I was saying a couple of weeks ago, Ket, one of the graffiti “godfathers” pleaded guilty. He was ordered yesterday to pay a $5,000 penalty for subway vandalism, doesn’t rue his spray-paint-filled past.
“I do not regret it,” Alain (KET) Mariduena said after being sentenced for felony criminal mischief in Manhattan Supreme Court. “I grew up in Brooklyn in the ’80s. It was a tough time. We had a lot to deal with, including the crack epidemic. This was a positive thing. It gave me a sense of self-esteem.”
After proclaiming his innocence, Mariduena pleaded guilty recently to spray painting the sides of subway trains in Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn between 2004 and late last year.
Manhattan Supreme Court Justice James Yates yesterday sentenced Mariduena, 36, to pay restitution to NYC Transit for vandalism in that borough. On Wednesday, a Queens judge ordered Mariduena to pay $4,274 in fines and restitution.

S-au furat bicicletele RULEZ!

Am aflat ieri cu stupoare ca, faimoasele de acum, biciclete RULEZ au fost furate. NUMAI in Romania se putea intampla asa ceva! La un concurs de street art sa ajungeti sa va furati intre voi?!?? E stupid si jenant … de-a dreptul.
Extras din siteul dedicat mediatizarii furtului:
RULEZ a fost invitat la “evenimentul anului” de cultura urbana Urbanskillz ca sa fie partener si sponsor. A dat premiile pentru sectiune de sk8, a furnizat canurile de spray la graffiti si si-a instalat un stand cu bicicletele de lux Pimp Garage (GER). Clubul cu pricina a fost FABRICA (fostul TestPoint).
Organizatorii au ursit 3 zile de distractie si voie buna in care RULEZ sa isi prezinte “bijuteriile coroanei”. In noaptea dintre sambata 3.noi si duminica 4 noi., intre orele 4am si 6am, cand programul cu publicul se incheiase, niste indivizi “bine” intentionati au furat bicicletele Rulez. Au avut destul spatiu de manevre incat au considerat ca merge furata si bicicleta ...

6-Year-Old Girl Facing $300 Fine for Graffiti Chalk Drawing

I just discovered today a somehow old article from The Brooklyn Paper. It is called ‘New face of vandalism?’
It is about a 6 years old girl who did what any normal kid does: she draw a picture with common sidewalk chalk. But no … the state forces don’t agree with us: “Please remove the GRAFFITI from your property. Failure to comply may result in enforcement action against you”. For Christ’s sake people! It’s a 6 years old KID!
A 6-year-old Park Slope girl is facing a $300 fine from the city for doing what city kids have been doing for decades: drawing a pretty picture with common sidewalk chalk.
Obviously not all of Natalie Shea’s 10th Street neighbors thought her blue chalk splotch was her best work — a neighbor called 311 to report the “graffiti,” and the Department of Sanitation quickly sent a standard letter to Natalie’s mom, Jen Pepperman.
Can somebody stop these bureaucrats before they Kafka again?
