In August 2007 Write4Gold crew will continue with the official Write4Gold qualifyings, starting off with overseas events in the U.S., China, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The winners of those events are qualified for the next Word Finals in July 2008. New events in Europe are scheduled for spring 2008, in 16 countries across Europe, within 5 months! In Germany there will be 2 events in 2008, one of them will take place in Hamburg, the city where Write4Gold took place for the very first time.

I found today an excellent graffiti essay that was put online by Roy Christopher.

One of the major things that differentiates the human species from all other species on Earth is our ability to externalize subjective memory. To write things down. To store and exchange ideas outside of our brains. This all started with cave paintings and etchings. Graffiti, if you will, was the beginning of written history.
Graffiti proper, in the modern sense of the term, started in the late 1960s in New York City when a kid from the Washington Heights section of Manhattan known as Taki 183 (”Taki” being his tag name and “183? being the street he lived on) emblazoned his tag all over NYC. He worked as a messenger and traveled all five boroughs via the subways. As such, he was the first “All-City” tagger. Cleaning this massive stadium must be an incredibly big job, so I guess after forty years of scrubbing graffiti off the walls, officials figured, “If you can’t beat them, join them”.
“A graffiti contest with the aim of ending vandal graffiti in the surroundings of the stadium was held in Mexico City recently. The best 300 designs received got the chance to be done on the walls of the stadium.”

Banksy wall was sold: £208,100

The Banksy piece of wall I was talking about earlier this month finally sold for the incredible sum of £208,100 (275,750 euros, 407,000 dollars) on Monday, according to the results of the eBay auction.
The sale on the Internet auction site attracted 69 bids, and the buyer now faces the additional charge of moving the work of art and replacing the wall.
A representative for Banksy confirmed the authenticity of the painting, and added that the artist would not issue any comment on its sale.
Banksy, originally from Bristol, western England, has attracted a global following with his graffiti paintings on the walls of London buildings, and his work has been bought by actress Angelina Jolie and singer Christina Aguilera.

A Wiki-like graffiti showed up in New York’s subway. It’s “Wikiffiti” from Bekathwia at Flickr. The system is borrowed from Wikipedia’s editing recommendation terminology to update an ad on New York’s subway.
Check the [citation needed] sticker that’s been slapped on the poster ad. Seems like wikispeak is getting under our cultural skin.

How to draw over an YouTube video

I just found out about an amazing web application somehow related to graffiti.
We can now draw over an YouTube video!
Here’s how it goes. Select the YouTube video you want to modify the copy the address from your browser. Paste this address on top of the application page, just below the Graffiti VIDAVEE logo then press LOAD. The YouTube video will be loaded. Play the video and stop it where you want to draw over it. Then click on the drop-down menu from the right side, choose an effect and drag it over the YouTube video. You can resize and move the effect to match your needs. That’s it :) Nothing more.

Graffiti archaeology

Graffiti Archaeology is a project devoted to the study of graffiti-covered walls as they change over time. The core of the project is a timelapse collage, made of photos of graffiti taken at the same location by many different photographers over a span of several years. The photos were taken in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and other cities, over a timespan from the late 1990’s to the present.
Using the grafarc explorer, you can visit some classic graffiti spots, see what they looked like in the past, and explore how they have changed over the years.

Graffiti School

Graffiti covers the brick inner walls surrounding the rooftop of the Seward Park High School building. It’s not vandalism. In fact, the principal and teachers of New Design High School, one of the five small schools in the building, initiated the display of paintings by legendary graffiti artists.
The Rooftop Legends project, started this fall and completed at the end of November, created dozens of colorful images of names, sayings, portraits and pictures from water towers to R2D2, to brighten up a space that had been unused for nearly 20 years.
Now it can become a place where students from the different schools in the building, who rarely see each other, can interact. It can also be a place for neighborhood events such as film showings.
