sturdy wooden e15 cabinets leave no trace
2007-07-16 21:09:10
i’m wild about furniture that doesn’t have a footprint, so these gorgeous floating cabinets are my cup of tea. crafted by german architect/designer philipp mainzer for e15, these simple cases are made from richly detailed wood planks and are available in two styles: the mahnaz with two horizontal drawers; and, the shahnaz with two square doors. the lack of footprint isn’t the only thing going for these substantial pieces — they also share the same dimensions, perfect for creating a seamless wall arrangement! if that isn’t enough, they also do a bathroom vanity: it all makes sense to me that i like these pieces now; i was this close to buying that big sur table from crate and barrel, which looks strangely identical to e15’s bigfoot: i have better taste than i thought. available in solid oak or walnut. more e15 info and samplings here. purchase their products at nest. via trendir e15, furniture, german, modern, oak, philipp mainzer, walnutshare th ...
plush illustrations by steve hughes
2007-07-16 16:28:22
ohio artist steve hughes originally went to kent state university to focus on the graphic design program, but his first basic drawing course was the gateway to the world of illustration. i’m so glad that he took that class. steve’s illustrations are created in traditional media like acrylic, collage, and oil. he uses digital techniques for professional design and sketchwork. steve has received recognition and accolades from portfolios.com, the society of illustrators, and american illustration. i love how his rich illustration style gives the viewer such a satisfying feeling of being intimately familiar with the subject matter. i’m also enjoying the humorous visual metaphors in his pen-and-ink-looking work. click here for more about steve. purchase his prints here, and tee shirts here and there. artist, celebrity, drawing, midwest, ohio, portraits, steve hughesshare this story ...
the carneros inn, napa, california
2007-07-16 16:25:28
the carneros inn is set up like a pseudo-planned, stepford-type community. think the subdivision on showtime’s meadowlands, combined with a little bit of wisteria lane. it felt a bit strange. don’t let that stop you from staying here, though. situated in the midst of expansive farmland in the carneros district, charming wood-sided one bedroom cottages dot the landscape, built in tight clusters, named after prominent families in the area. the grounds are quite lovely, with an apple orchard and mature swaths of abundant lavender and rosemary plants. there’s a “town hall” for meetings, gourmet grocery store, spa, fitness center and three restaurants, all contained within the property. we walked into the lofty, rustic-chic registration building, surrounded by beautiful landscaping, and were impressed with tons of natural light, high ceilings, and a light white color scheme. off the room where you check in is a living room of sorts, with comfy leather seating ...

the new ducasse-alessi pasta pot
2007-07-12 23:27:06
tired of dirtying every pan in the kitchen just to make spaghetti? look at this beautiful pasta cooking pot, designed by alain ducasse and patrick jouin, and distributed by alessi. it lets you cook pasta and sauce all at once. the starches are not discarded with the cooking water but instead are totally absorbed by the pasta, and the same holds true for the sauce ingredients. follow this formula for success: first, put the dry pasta in the pot; then, add the ingredients of whatever sauce you want to make; and finally, add water or broth, all at once or gradually, cooking everything together with the specially designed cover, stirring occasionally. in just a little more time than normally required to traditionally boil the pasta, your pasta with sauce is done and served directly at the table on the included trivet. several gorgeous recipes from the legend ducasse are included. in 18/10 stainless steel, with one melamine spoon and trivet. unica home is now accepting advance orders. v ...

paper cuts from artist peter callesen
2007-07-12 08:09:07
danish artist peter callesen creates art and sculpture by making small cuts in plain white paper. this medium gives the work a fragility, which is harmonious with their underlying themes. he focuses on the reinterpretation of childhood memories and classic romantic fairy tales, and is interested in the relationship between two and three dimensionality. he considers his pieces to be a combination of dream and reality. when captured somewhere in between, they become living, bittersweet things. he calls the metamorphosis of a flat piece of paper into a three dimensional form “obvious” magic, because the process is straightforward, and the figures remain attached to their origins, with no possibility of escape. in that sense, there is also an aspect of something tragic in most of the cuts. peter also creates large scale sculpture, like this floating polystyrene castle. his poetic and intriguing work can be interpreted in myriad ways, by children and adults alike. peter wi ...
