How to Start Conversations and Connect with Others : What Do I Say Next?
1969-12-31 17:59:59
Sometimes we find ourselves at a loss for words and don'tknow what to say next.A reader wrote me asking me to make some suggestionsfor this problem. What to do? What to say? How to act?The causes of being speechless are many.--You feel shy and awkward, perhaps due to an unfamiliar situation--You lack knowledge of the topic being discussed--You are awestruck in the presence of a V.I.P or celebrity--You scare yourself with negative self-talk (?I'll sound stupid?)--You don't have an adequate vocabulary to express ideas--Your conversational partner is withdrawn and non-communicativeSuggestions for getting unstuck:1. Instead of relying solely on being spontaneous, take sometime to prepare some remarks in advance. If you tend to be shy,you probably hesitate to talk about yourself, even though you willoften be expected to because people will ask you about your workand your personal life. Collecting your thoughts in advance willprovide you with something to say.2. Focus more on being intere ...

How to Start Conversations and Connect with Others : A Second Chance to Make a First Impression
1969-12-31 17:59:59
?For nearly 20 years, the cliché phrase ?You never get a second chance to make a first impression? has become virtually an axiom. Its clear implication: If you mess up the first time, you'll never be able to overcome the poor impression you've made. That's nonsense. We all have experience revising the impressions we have of people we meet, sometimes very dramatically. ?I had the wrong idea about George. He's really a nice guy once you get to know him.?In a sense, the moment of first contact is an audition. What we say, how we say it, how we move and act ? all these factors and many more contribute to the first impression we give off. In cases such as selection job interviews, a salesperson's cold-call, and formal auditions for performers, one may not get more than one chance to make a winning impression. However, in most cases, we get many opportunities to create a lasting impression. As impression-receivers, we are constantly revising the sense we have of other persons. In the most ...

A Scotchman's appetite A Scotchman in a tavern bet 100 dollars that he could eat a turkey and three pounds of sausages. The turkey was cooked and set before him, and the man ate it up; then the sausages were cooked and set before him and the man ate them up. He got his money, drank a few glasses of beer and went home with a friend. When they were near his house, he said to his friend:"Don't speak of the bet to my wife. Don't tell her that I have eaten so much." "Why?"asked his friend. "Because she would give me no supper."answered the man. ...

DownloadHi, I?m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.Today I have some news. Drum roll, please. The Daily English show?s next location has been decided. This show started in Tokyo, then moved to Niseko and the next location is ... Canada.I?ve never been to Canada before, in fact, I?ve never been anywhere in that whole continent of America. So it?s pretty exciting. So we (my boyfriend and I) are going to be doing Wwoofing. Wwoofing stands for world wide opportunities on organic farms. I always thought it stood for willing workers on organic farms ? but anyway. It?s a kind of volunteer organization ? and you do volunteer work on organic farms ? and you get food and accommodation provided. It?s not full time work ? just about 4 hours a day, so I?ll have plenty of time to keep doing The Daily English Show and teaching online. I?m really looking forward to meeting some interesting Canadian people. And learning some Canadian English ? and hopefully learning something about the native Americ ...

And she stayed in Auckland for 10 months and studied reflexology and worked at a Japanese restaurant. What is the food like at Japanese restaurants in New Zealand?Yeah, sometimes good. But sometimes terrible. Yeah. When I see sushi, sushi is always with nori and rolling, roll sushi. And my friend asked me in Japan ... actually my boyfriend asked me about sushi in Japan. He said ?what is this??. ?This is sushi?. And I said ... and he said ?no, sushi should be rolling?. So, I was surprised. What most surprised you when you went to New Zealand?Ah, it was ... I didn?t know about Japan, Japanese culture, Japanese things, more than I thought. I studied a lot of things in New Zealand about Japan. About what did Japan do at the World War 2, or yeah ... many things. In Japan we can watch the movie about the war but they are just only for Japanese s ...
