SSH: Remote Login without Password
2007-09-17 05:36:00
If you work with a large number of Linux terminals & had difficulties to remember each console password, then you can keep this trick. Connecting to a remote method using SSH (Secure SHell) will prompt you a password screen before attempting to login into target host. Below procedure has the same mechanism with FTP auto connect using .netrc files like I had described earlier. The main similarity tricks is creating a file contains identity information or something like that. The difference is, you have to store the identity SSH file to the remote machine.First of all, on your own computer, create a public key identification by generating manually from ssh-keygen command like below:[root@tuxbook ~]# ssh-keygenGenerating public/private rsa key pair.Enter file in which to save the key (/root/.ssh/id_rsa):Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase):Enter same passphrase again:Your identification has been saved in /root/.ssh/id_rsa.Your public key has been saved in /root/.ssh/id_rsa.pub.T ...

Acer Travelmate 6291: Installing Mac OS X Tiger in Logical Partition
2007-09-13 05:19:00
4 days full of patient downloading 4.4GB Mac OS X image from my office was not too worthless. Suddenly, I got interested in Mac after seeing from a site on internet how beautiful is their Mac desktop installed in x86 Intel machine. For somehow, my curiosity was shows up on that time. After 2 tired sick days trying to install & re-install, now I feel totally satisfied having triple boot system between Windows XP, Fedora 7 & Mac OS X in my Acer laptop. As like usual, the very first action to do before installing an OS is preparing the partition storage. For this requirement, I tried to provide 10GB of new blank partition I made successfully after resizing partition from Linux Fedora 7. I then formatted this logical partition with FAT32 type since I don’t have any idea what the OS X will fits, either the partition tool seems not support to create the Mac journalized file system format (HFS+ or 0xaf).Installing this such OS was very simple & quick. No frequent question window display ...

qtparted: Linux Based Partition Magic
2007-09-11 22:16:00
One of my question are now resolved on how to resize partition under Linux in easy way. Here it come qtparted, a GUI front-end likes Partition Magic. No more confuse with fdisk, parted or other command line tools. With basic knowledge of Partition Magic, now you are ready to action with qtparted.qtparted has the same interface with Partition Magic. This is the greatest advantages when I tried to use it for the first time on my Fedora 7 box. For testing scenario, I tried to resizing my 3rd partition so that it will create a new blank partition. My pre-existing disk condition contains 5 partitions. Below was the partitions table as seen under qtparted window:The first only active primary partition set to Windows XP in NTFS format type with size of 15GB. The rest of the partition stay under logical. The 2nd partition (FAT32) available for program files & it has 20GB size. The 3rd (FAT32) was stored 30GB for data files purposed. The 4th partition room provided for Fedora 7 (10GB in ext3 fo ...

VirtualBox: Windows XP Guest in Linux Fedora 7 Host
2007-08-15 20:31:00
As my previous plan to review the using of Windows XP guest in Linux host over VirtualBox, I decided to choose my existing Fedora 7 as the 2nd OS boot from my laptop as the host OS. Actually, my priority subjected to this than the previous. The main purpose is to make simply my coding time when I have a web based project & also the debugging sessions. It’s important for me to keep a maximum compatibility cross browser looks & functionality between Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera compared to the native Linux internet browser such as Konqueror. Now, I don’t have to wasting time to test & re-code the source between browser on separated systems. Switching the OS are more faster than have a dual boot systems. It’s also more easy when you need to carry 2 systems on a single PC or laptop. Again, think about it!To did this, I used the older VirtualBox 1.3.8 downloaded from the website. Even that the latest 1.4.0 version are equipped with pre built-in networking bridging tools, but ...

VirtualBox: Windows XP Guest in Windows XP Host
2007-08-14 01:13:00
What if you in a travel & hardly needs to get work in a networking situation? A virtual machine (VM) installed in your system can do that. This situation also affected when you only have 1 PC but you must have at least 2 PC to get work, just like me as I have a laptop but need 2nd PC in order to support my jobs. Rather than spending money to buying extra PC/laptop, I considered to using a VM over my laptop. It’s more valuable, practice & easy to carry as you will have 2 working PC in a single system. Think about it!The needs of 2 PC’s using Windows XP – for example – can help a programmer to debug their windows client/server based application which using a networking utilization. Why I choose VirtualBox? It’s as simply as that it’s free, lightweight & robust. This article is my continued part of my first experience about VirtualBox behavior in DHCP server & comparison between VirtualBox & QEMU. As seen on the title, I used both of Windows XP as the host & guest ...

Windows XP Taste on KDE in Fedora 7
2007-08-05 21:39:00
KDE is my most favorite desktop manager on Linux. Since I ever used it up for the first time with Unix families several years ago, this desktop manager wouldn’t leaves behind over me. It’s strong characteristic GUI still easy to use. For me, this is the window manager mores closest similarity to Windows & much easiest to control all of the applications installed on the system. One of the several features I likes a lot is the existence of theme manager option included in KDE Control Center. With it, the users are feel free to change the interface such as desktop window graphical, the background picture, icons, kicker, panel behavior, login manager & lots of thing. On a chance, I tried to keep on focused about re-changed the interface into a Windows XP style. For this purpose, I used my laptop installed with Fedora 7 (KDE 3.5.9). Thanks to kde-look.org for providing all the stuffs I needed to make it happen. Just for reference, the picture below is final result of my own modificat ...

Web Operating System: Flatten the World(?)
2007-07-31 20:33:00
Web operating system establishing an exciting new look of futures OS. In latest year, several web based OS was introduced from each developer over the earth. It purposed was clearly simple, flatten the world I guess. Some of it’s known as eyeOS, DesktopTwo & CorneliOS. On a time, I got a chance to tried eyeOS. The installation source downloaded from it official website was very small with 862Kb zipped package. eyeOS required a web server with PHP support & of course a browser to run. Seems funny with the basic name “Operating System” while it needs a browser which executed from the real OS.The login page is simplest as any web mail ever. The new user link can disabled from the setup install process. The user desktop shows an intuitive interface. Very lightweight, again. As you may seen, there are 2 folder shortcut links on the left side, some widgets on top, main green panel on near bottom & virtual taskbar on the bottom side (equipped with a static place of clock on the righ ...

QEMU: Virtual Machine Manager (Part III)
2007-07-24 20:03:00
After proceed the last 2 previous articles, now I have a Windows XP emulated over QEMU. In my situation, - I explained again that - it was running with Acer Travelmate 6291 on Linux Fedora Core 7. After last step process, it now should be restart automatically. If it is not, get started manually by pressing Run button on main panel of QEMU.Now, let's take look at inside of the system emulated hardware. What it displayed on system properties window? For somehow, QEMU interpretive that the system is currently running on Intel Pentium II processor with 39.05Ghz of speed. What a confused display. This is the reason why that the installation process was established (a very) slowly. I couldn’t figured out why it happened. Anyway, the dual virtual processor logic was displayed correctly. Also the system RAM 256MB was dedicated as so as well. From Device Manager window, some hardware was detected improperly. The real Mobile Intel 945GM/GU Express chipset family detected as Cirrus Logic 5446 ...

QEMU: Virtual Machine Manager (Part II)
2007-07-23 19:38:00
Start the VM you had created before, make sure that the installation media is exist. A common installation process will displayed. From main panel of VM application, you can see the real time display information of CPU & memory usage while you are on a stage of installation process. It's a kind of interesting part of QEMU. Back to VM Console display. Continue the installation process as is usual & follow the step by step wizard until the copying files started. Some odd graphic displayed during this sessions. It’s a kind of artifact or something. This is not happened using others VM such as VirtualBox. I thought that the GDI or something similar are not optimally emulated.Wait until the copying files is completed. Now you are ready to first boot the Windows. If your VM is not started automatically, get it on manually. The 2nd stage of installation process in GUI are now established. Again, follow as is usual. Although it is possible to display & make changes on currently hardware, a ...

QEMU: Virtual Machine Manager (Part I)
2007-07-22 20:51:00
One great package I found after installing Fedora 7 is the new existence of QEMU. This such toy never exist on previous Fedora series, AFAIK. QEMU is an alternative virtual machine (VM) available on Linux system. Another VM called VirtualBox had been personally reviewed couple weeks ago on my latest articles. This session talks about QEMU compared to VirtualBox in some aspects, including step-by-step, know-how, resource meter & others critical points. A scenario had been made with installing Windows XP SP2 on my laptop (Acer Travelmate 6291).First of all, create a new virtual system by clicking File :: New Machine. A welcome window will appear, simply click Forward button to continue the next step.Create the system name with your favorite name. Click Forward again to confirm.Provide the Windows XP installation media in optical drive or browse the ISO image format type. Select Windows in OS Type combo box & Microsoft Windows XP as the variant. Note that if you select an ISO image source ...

Fedora Core 7 on an Acer TravelMate 6291
2007-07-09 21:08:00
I’m running my curiosity to exploring the Fedora series on my laptop. Since there were lot of hardware detection failure on previous Fedora version, now I’m working it on Fedora Core 7. The installation comes with DVD setup CD I’ve got from internet & it finished to setup from scratch with much times needed (about 45 minutes) but nothing serious problems happened indeed. Some odd things going through such as:1. Missing total size of installed packages during package selection. There will be no more information regarding to the total size package needed to be installed. This is important since we can prepared the amount of size of partition system.2. Missing of mc (Midnight Commander) package. Why the developer loosing this powerful tool from the packages? Peoples are needed this tool so much. Even it can be installed later from yum or RPM portal (such as rpmfind.net or livna’s portal), but the lacks of it is such a great fools.3. Also (another) lacks of k3b burning software. Is ...

Installing SATA Hard Drive with Windows XP (Without Floppy Drive)
2007-06-25 00:18:00
As we know, Microsoft stopped Windows XP selling product to new computer purchasing in order to overcoming Windows Vista. On recent days, new computers or notebooks product which has the requirement hardware are now capable to use it. It will run, but slow (a very to me). To make it double faster running OS, try to using Windows XP.One problem found that lots of newest computers or notebooks are equipped with a SATA interface hard drive that not all recognized by Windows XP installer. It would ask the SATA driver for the hardware and you must provide it before continue to installing the rest processes. For example, a week ago I’ve purchased an Acer Travelmate 6291-100508. This sub-notebook are comes with Intel Core 2 Duo 1,66 GHz processor, 80 GB SATA hard drive, 512 MB DDRAM, DVD RAM Super Multi, 12.1” WXGA screen & LinPus Linux pre-installed OS. From the selling box, Acer recommended to use Windows Vista hence there are no Windows XP driver CD software included. In manner way, ...

Preview Siemens GSM Modem (TMA M39i)
2007-06-21 20:24:00
The most easiest way to setup an SMS gateway is using custom GSM modem. With it, you don’t have any necessary to contact telecommunication network provider to provide the access number or thinking about the rules of regulation which may break you down. Since it’s need a conventional SIM card just as the same as cellular phone, the control is on your own. But, note about spend you must willing on it. The article below doesn’t have anything related upon Siemens commercial programs, indeed it is the time to share my experience after using this product.Siemens released the latest (CMIIW) GSM Modem product of TMA M39i series (the predecessor was M35). The previous series I used ever was from series TC35 for couple years ago. The TMA M39i comes with silver colored casing, with size a little bit larger then TC35. Right up in the box, you may find a standard DB9 RS232 cable connection, SMA male antenna connector, standard plug-in power supply & some manual book on a CD (including complet ...
